From a 12 oz. bottle into a small tulip glass, pours dark root beer in appearance with a straight white head that lasts a bit. Moderate aroma is promising mix of sweetness, dark malts, something roasted. Light carbonation; relatively easy to drink, creamy, malty mouthfeel, with some heft. Flavor is enjoyable to me - malt, caramel, but not overly sweet, with some spice or kick underneath. Moderate as barleywines go, smooth with some warmth; I liked it. One of the better Pyramid offerings, and I buy Pyramid variety packs pretty often. (10/27/12 @home)

12oz bottle - A very easy to approach barleywine for those that maybe haven’t been exposed to the style. Surprisngly high in alcohol, but tempered with enough caramel/toffee notes to be pleasing to the nose and palate. There is definitely some depth here with some dark fruits with just a slight echo of hops. A pretty straightforward barleywine, but tasty and satisfying.

Aged a year. Dark murky brown with a slight plum tone under a small foamy tan head. Nose is stone-fruity with notes of plum and raisin and a bit of cherry, as well as nutty toffee and a sugary caramel sweetness. The taste is a bit earthy but very largely sweet with some nutty toffee, candy sugar, stone fruits, and caramel..sorta has a weird tobacco tone toward the end, but it’s light and fleeting. Neat little herbal hop tone in the middle and finish. Lots of earthy plum raisin and cherry with a boozy toffee note.

12 ounce bottle from State Line Liquors. Pours a dark reddish brown color with a thin frothy tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of toffee, some mild toast and a bitter hop finish. The taste is toffee, treacle, almost chocolatey and a bitter citrus hop finish. Medium bodied, bitter hop finish, Solid beer.

Brown color, minimal head. Aroma is very strong molasses, sweetness, I thought it was better than average. The flavor was more molasses but also a bit of tobacco. My buddy said it was like the spit from chewing tobacco. I wouldn’t buy this but it wasn’t disgusting, just an average barleywine. Serving type: bottle 12-17-2012 01:19:21

Tap at the Sacramento venue. Pours nearly black with a creamy beige head. Brown sugar aroma. Flavor is biter with a touch of heat.So bitter the brown sugar is background. Malty yet bitter. Heat sort of dissipates. Excellent.

Nice barleywine but even with the high alcohol it really didn’t have the kick that most do. I think it was also a little thick but not bad for Pyramid.

12 oz. bottle from 5000. Pours a deep amber/copper color with a small beige head. The aroma is sweeter toffee and caramel malts, some dark fruits with a touch of herbal hops. The flavor is again very malt forward with caramel and toffee being prominent. Some dark fruit that is on the ripe side and light herbal hops. Pretty one dimensional, but decent. Hides the abv pretty well.

Pours a dark brown red with an off white head, aroma was very sweet with a lot of malt and some dark fruit mixed in, the flavor has a good amount of caramel and malt with some hops in the finish, abv is well hidden, really not all that bad

Bottle shared by alexsadad06. Poured clear dark brown in color with an average white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate dark fruit, malt and herbal hop aroma. Moderate smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium complex sweet flavor to medium dark sweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met with a complex beer.
