Alehouse exclusive. An American style light bodied wheat ale that is refreshingly flavorful. Crystal wheat ale was inspired by Pyramid’s first beer in 1984 the wheaten ale, which was the first year round wheat beer brewed in America since prohibition

Poured from tap at Berkeley Pyramid ale house, labeled crystal wheat ale, as a clear pale blonde ale with a small white head with low carbonation. Aroma of banana, caramel and malt. Flavor is lightly sweet with banana, honey, and malt. The palate is sweet with a light tartness and a slight carbonation tingle. Nice overall, could use more carbonation to pump up the spice tingle on tongue, but I would drink this one again.

clear yellow gold, two finger head of fluffy white small bubbles. strong yet soft dry baked wheat aroma. soft, light, and dusty on the palate with a little peak of bitterness if only for a second. balanced nicely, the initial sweetness never gets out of control, though the style isn’t my thing.

12oz bottle of Crystal Wheat Ale. Purely clear dark golden with nice head and good retention. Light, sweet malt aroma with a touch of spicy hops. Crisp wheat and light sweetness in the taste. Spicy hops and moderately bitter finish is more than I expected. I expected zilch from this. But, I’m pleasantly surprised. I’d gladly drink this when looking for a light session beer any time. Very refreshing, yet taste is still there. Great baseball beer.

Bottle. Labeled as Crystal Wheat. Looks like a pale lager, nice white head. Heavy wheat, light citrus, not much else. Very watery, some wheat, very light.

UPDATED: AUG 7, 2008 On tap at Sac brewery. Billed as an unfiltered brew, this one was clearer than my shower door (when dry). There wasn’t anything that stood out; it was just a very smooth, yet bland, Hefe.

On tap at the SoDo brewery. Pours clear light amber with a lacy white head. Fruit aroma. Light, watery body and medium carbonation. A little sour on the finish. Not a memorable beer.

Poured a clear copper body with a small-to-wispy white head. Nose of lemony wheat and mild cascade hops. Slightly fruity from malt and hops balance. Has the distict Pyramid yeast nose. Easy to drink. Slightly chalky. Finishes somewhat dry and thin and slightly tart. A very nice session beer and rather unique for an American Kristall Weizen.

UPDATED: JUN 8, 2008 Clear orange gold. No head. Light wheat aroma with some lemon. Flavor is mostly some nice lemon notes. Light wheat and maybe a little bubble gum fruitiness? Pretty light. Good carbonation. Flavor is identical to their wheat beer, but not as heavy. Obviously huh?

On tap at Pyramid Alehouse
Golden, sparkling. Slightly fruity, slightly wheaty. Clean and somewhat refreshing. Typical for the style in that it lacks yeast complexity or interesting malt notes. Achieving emptiness should be the purview of depressed goth kids not brewers.
