COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A growing style in the Northwest, Dark IPA’s feature all the tasty attributes of a standard IPA, yet juxtaposed against a black malt canvas. Discord is not short on character, with a prominent malt profile that meets up with the bitterness and hop presence from five different hops. A variety of roasted malts provide color and flavor, yet this beer has a lighter body reminiscent of an IPA, not heavy like a porter or stout.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with big tan fluffy head. It looks like I just poured a root beer float. Aroma of dark chocolate and malts. Flavor is bitter coffee and vanilla, with some hoppy bitterness in the finish.

Lemon/orange/grapefruit hops, with caramel and roasted malt (more roasted in flavor than aroma). A little herbal-ish acrid flavor--not much. Nice lingering fruity flavor. Aroma is a little soapy.

Pours black like a porter but the nose is all IPA. Citrus and piney hops with roasted malt and coffee. The flavor starts with a fair dose of roasted malt, caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Grapefruit and pine come next to round it out. The finish is tangy with peachy citrus that carries through to the finish. The best Pyramid beer to come along in quite some time.

Pour is a dark brown with a huge tan head. Aroma is a decent mix of hops and roasted malt. Flavor is much the same a nice hoppy backbone with a decent helping of roast malt. A nice roast is left on the tounge after the swallow. This was quite decent from a brewer that makes so-so stuff.

Pours a dark mahogany brown with a nice long lasting foamy cream colored head. Nose is deep hops with strong citrus along with resin and pine. Taste is bitter with general citrus and some burnt malt. Finish is dry, and bitter, Descent but nothing outstanding. Quaff 6 / 10

Pours brown with a tan head and aroma of citrus and hops. Taste is bitter up front, lots of hops, pine, citrus, and light roasted malt with a big bitter, dry finish. Solid black IPA

Bottle: the aromatics are the highlight. Heavy on citrus. The deep brown colt is unique & the head creamy & lasting. The flavor is decent. Buttery up front but a little tangy with a prominent sour finish. Overall, nice to try. Good with vegetarian pizza & artichokes. ~m --RaucusBacchus

Dark brown, clear, beige head. Aroma of caramel, some toast, cocoa, and piney-resiny hops. Flavor of grainy malt with chocolate, some caramel sweetness, dry cocoa, resiny hop bitterness.

glennmastrange (1886) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - APR 30, 2013
Bottle. Moderate dark bread and roasted for the malt, moderate to heavy pine resin for the hops, light dough for the yeast, with hints of wood, pepper and cardboard. Head is huge, frothy turning rocky like whipped cream, light tan with excellent lacing and is annoyingly fully lasting. Color is clear dark brown. Flavor is moderately acidic to start, then finishes lightly to moderately acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is on the lighter side of medium, dry with a lively to fizzy carbonation. Other than the monstrous head this Black IPA was a real pleasure to drink.

Bottle:   Deep brown, with some copper and ruby highlights, moderate to large foamy beige head, so-so lacing.   Seems like a well balanced hop nose with a roasted malt background.   Minor earth, and even softer cow pasture.   Hoppy up front, moreso than roasty but its there.   Slightly acrid, but not too strong.   In terms of hops and roastiness, its moderate.   Neither trys to outdo the other.   The astringency I could do without tho.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Slight metallic note on the backside.   Very pithy too.   Its okay, but its a little rough without being strong on the flavors that need to be.   I had this on draught before an M’s game this summer and I thought it was much better, roastier and smoother.   I guess I had higher hopes for this bottle.

Bottle. Very dark brown pour with a creamy head. Some citrus and pine on the nose. Medium smooth palate, a little bittersweet on the finish. Not bad at all.
