Pyramid Draught Pale Ale - Nitrogenated version of our Gold Medal Winning MacTarnahan’s Amber Ale. Alehouse-only.

As the draft version of Pyramid Pale Ale , our DPA is served in the Irish style with a blend of nitrogen and carbon dioxide - giving it a uniquely smooth flavor reminiscent of Britain’s famous hand-pulled cask ales.

Tap at the Berkeley venue. Pours amber with an off-white head. Mild citrus aroma. Med body or nearly. Flavor is mild roasty malt, fruit, citrus. There’s hop, but not all that much. Finishes barely sufficiently bitter.

This has to be Pyramid’s biggest mistake. The nitro head is a gimmick at best. Add in a general blandness, and you’re left with a mediocre beer.

On tap at the Portland Brewing taphouse. On nitro. Pours a clear copper color with a large nitro head. A floral and grainy nose. The flavor is super sweet, buttery, a bit of toasted malts, oranges, sweet butterscotch. Not very good. Drinkable.

Draft at the Safeco Field brewpub. Pours light coppery amber with densely moussy but very thin off-white head. Plenty of lace. Sour sweaty nose, some CO2 and yeast there. Watery, lightly fizzy attack. Bitter toast and light aluminum notes. Fairly clean finish.

1/2 pint on nitro at Barclay’s in Oakland. Solid cream top over an amber-colored, clear brew. Nutty buddy! Milky caramel. Doesn’t lend itself well to the nitro delivery, IMHO. (#3416, 4/12/2008)
