3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A reddish brown coloured beer with a weak white head. A light fruity malt aroma, some hints of smoke, caramel and hay. Dry mouthfeel. A dry cereal taste, malt and wheat, then a smoky, spicy flavour comes through, bringing with it a more zesty fruitiness. The finish is a tad more bitter than the initial flavour.

500ml screw top bottle from Beers of Europe: BBD 16 06 2015. Poured into a stemmed pilsner glass three times at home on 04 04 2015. Red hue to the body colour and a red berry flavour throughout. Semi-sweet base and easy to drink, different and I though unusual for a traditional German brewery’s beer (yes I know there are plenty of new styles being brewed in Germany these days.)

Bottle. Dark amber beer with a strong slightly off white head. The aroma is sweetly roasted, and the flavour is gently bitter and roasted with some yeasty and chocolatey notes. Overall a nice lightly malty and roasted beer.

2.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
A traditional red beer from Franconia. The founder of the brewery fled Austria for religious reasons, back in the seventeenth century, but he couldn’t say goodbye to Viennese malt, which gives this beer its typical light-sweet taste. Flowery hops give it a very nice aroma, but the palate is thin. Screw-cap bottle, some ears of barley on the label with a banner proclaiming: "a small village in Franconia is famous for its good beer". As an afterthought, somebody stuck a little badge next to the ingredients list, saying "... and love, too".

Malty, slightly fruity taste with notes of apricots, toast, dried fruit, cereal and a gentle spicy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a slight sweetness. Tasty and well balanced. Quite nice.
