CapnCascade (38), Calgary, Alberta, Canada May 22, 2008 Pours black with a cream head that has some retention and lacing. Rich aroma has notes of caramel and light brown sugar. Flavor is very dry and herbal with a noticeable hop back and decided roastiness, almost burnt but not unpleasant. Not terribly complex, though. Palate has decent carbonation but limited creaminess. Overall a decent effort but could certainly be richer to suit the style.
Retorp (2154), Tampa, Florida, USA Jul 18, 2008 The aroma is light, muted, cocoa, grassy hops, tangy fruits. The body is dark brown and holds a thin tan head. The flavor is mostly coffee, smoke, cocoa and a light fruit and chocolate sweetness. Soft mouth feel and carbonation.
DougShoemaker (2560), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 6, 2008 Aroma is dark chocolate, strong coffee and smoke, dark brown, tiny tan head. Softer taste of chocolate than the nose, pleasing malt also. Light to medium bodied, nicely bitter. Very good. Thanks tiggmtl via mds. BBB63 (3767), La Porte, Indiana, USA Mar 24, 2008 At the BBB63 comes to Tampa gathering, thanks to host Joe:
Opaque with a small head and good lace. The aroma has notes of coffee, chocolate, smoke, oatmeal, caramel, walnut, and musty yeast esters. The taste is ripe dark fruit and toasty oats with a note of chocolate. A bit medicinal and salty. The mouth feel is thin and fizzy, metallic finish. Blah, okay I guess. Nothing memorable at all. hopscotch (4431), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Mar 18, 2008 Bottle… March 08 Tampa Bay Tasting… Murky black ale with a small, creamy, beige head. The grainy nose imparts notes of blue corn, chocolate, tobacco and a puff of smoke. Light to medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Well-balanced and inoffensive, but bland, thin and watery. Burnt, tangy finish.
