3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Tap at the brewpub. Black body with a light tan head. Chocolate chip pancakes and roast. The taste is roasted with lots of walnuts. A rich body. Decent.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Had this on tap a few weeks ago at a beer event, then just the other day at the brewpub.
Pours a very deep black color, at the event it had basically no head, but at the brewpub this was a perfect looking glass of beer with a tight light tan head and good lacing on the glass.
The aroma is very rich and lightly sweet smelling with some roastiness and a good bit of dark chocolate, not Hershey’s syrupy at all... which beers like this can tend towards. The nose on this beer is all about chocolate but it’s not a cheap or cloying chocolate character at all.
The flavor is pretty much the same as the aroma descriptor-wise, rich dark chocolate, lightly roasty, sweet but not cloying. It’s also got mild tones of banana, cherry, and vanilla. The level of bitterness is moderate but the bitterness goes quite a long way in aiding the delicious-ness of this beer.
A top beer from Raccoon River indeed.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with an offwhite to beige head. Has a huge roasted aroma. The smoke is very prominent, even to the taste. It’s not so chocolatey, but still quite good.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Festival of Iowa Beers 2009. Poured a clear dark brown color with orange light shining through. The head was light tan. Smelled of cocoa powder and subdued cola. medium bodied and slightly sweet with mild roasty bitterness. The flavors followed the aromas; cola and milk chocolate mostly. There was also a strange fruity note.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap @ the brewpub, served black with a sticky medium strong head. Aroma is lightly prune-y, cocoa but mostly empty and metallic as well. Taste is similarly metallic and empty. It is also a woody (in a bad way) chocolate to it. There is nothing wrong with it but bland and weak.
