| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jan 3, 2010 Ah, pilsner, how I love thee, let me count the ways… No, really, I do. A good pilsner is a beauteous quaffing delight like all other beauteous quaffing delights. The pilsner is also an unfortunate victim of its own drinkability, defenseless against the behemoths who would exploit her good nature and pleasing virtues for their own greedy benefit. Forsaking the pride and glory of the fine Pilsner for a weak imitation, she ends up but a mere shadow of her original beauty. There are still many though who stand strong against sameness and dullness, clinging gallantly to the proud heritage of the Pilsner, both German and Czech in origin. While one usually imagines Czechoslovakia when thinking of the Pilsner, so too does Germany have a proud history with pilsner which continues today. Radeberger is located in Radeberg, Germany and is owned by the Oetker Group. That being said, they still brew a decent example of the German Pilsner which is enjoyed both in her home-country and abroad, the USA being one of Radeberger’s Pilsner destination.
Clear straw yellow with a glint of hay and gold beneath a generous white head that lazes about with no real destination or sense of urgency. Rocky and splotchy, lace sticks like glue to all available surfaces within my pilsner glass as her head slowly recedes into a fluffy cottony-white comforter. Yes, my friends, when enjoying a pilsner make sure to enjoy her out of a proper pilsner glass. Crisp lemon splashes my face while lemon pith swoops on in to dry it. Swaying under a gentle breeze in the background are fields of grain and straw stretching as far as thine eye can see and beyond. Water crackers crunch and white bread turns a delicious golden brown in the toaster oven. Awaiting a generous slathering on said toast is honey fresh off the comb while a faint wisp of sweet cereal grains and green grass flitters off and on. Clean, brisk, and vibrant, I am ready to meet the Radeberger on open and fair terms. My first quaff is equally bright and crisp as her nose. Lemon skin, pith, and green grass dance before my attentive palate while honey kisses my lips before, during, and afterwards. A clean finish, her honey lingers along with soft grains basking under the sun on a glorious spring day. Her lemon and grass presence continues to grow in the middle of the palate while water crackers and white bread, toasted and golden, offer a solid malty backbone. Clean, crisp, straightforward, and easy on the eyes, the Radeberger is also easy on the palate in the most delightfully quaffing sense possible.
It’s easy to see how the Pilsner captured the world’s attention to rise to lofty standards of greatness, and it’s also easy to see how hard it fell upon abysmal disservice. Radeberger was a tasty German pilsner of fine proportions. Not great by any means, but still a proud supporter of fine Pilsner tradition. fugitive (36), Athens, Greece

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Dec 29, 2009 33cl bottle. Gold with a medium, white head that leaves lasting foam. The aroma is pretty bland, with grainy malt and a hint of spicy hops. The flavor is relatively dry and has some cracker-like malt flavors with a little noble bitterness in the finish that leaves a slight herbal impression. Light bodied and frizzy. Almost gets there, but not one of the better german pilseners, just ok. tpd975 (258), Riverview, Florida, USA
