12 oz bottle from Ben. Dark brown, almost black pour with a thin tan head. Earthy aroma (reminded me of an open field) with notes of chocolate and caramel with a big malty presence. Sweet flavor with more caramel and malt presence. Finish is kind of sweet and almost tangy. Very nice beer.

Deep translucent prune color, nearly completely flat- headless. The aroma is a thick raisiny, pruney smell and the flavor is the same, like a simpler, lower alcohol Quad. this is very nice, focus, and sweet with a little hoppy tingle in the aftertaste. From a Trade with EricAndersnavy- thanks!

Pours dark mahogany with a fluffy off-white/tan head. Smells strongly of sweet malts and no hops or bitterness whatsoever. Tastes of alcohol with some faint, almost burnt caramel flavor. Full-bodied with a sticky texture that coats the mouth and no mouth carbonation, Rahr & Sons Iron Thistle finishes dry, but not bitter, more from malts. This is, unfortunately not the best Scotch Ale I’ve ever had, and I expect better from Rahr & Sons when it comes to their specialty beers.

12oz traded bottle. Not bad at all. Pours a nice dark brown with some ruby highlights and a foamy, khaki head. Aroma and flavor are dominated by sweeter malt and even a hint of chocolate. Just a hint of hop spice and the 8.5 ABV is not noticeable at all.

12oz bottle from blutt59, thanks Bob! Pours a cloudy, deep brown, amber tinted body with a finger-width, foamy, tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a pretty nice lacing. Aroma is sweeter caramels, raisins and dried cherries, a touch of cocoa, and a light peat. This is fairly malty and fruity, but the peat and cocoa come out nicely as this warms along with some molasses. Flavor is similar. Fruity caramels with some raisins, dates, and dried cherries. A touch of cocoa, fairly nutty with some molasses, and some florals in an up front malty sweetness. A light peat and smokey roast come in to balance at the end as this finishes with a darker caramel sweetness, fruit, and a light earthy bitterness. Lengthy aftertaste following a medium, smooth body and somewhat creamy, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid scotch ale. Fairly malty sweet and a good amount of fruits, but the mix of peat, earth, and a slight roast balance this nicely. Just a touch of alcohol warmth in the throat, but aside from that this drinks less than the advertised 8.5% ABV. Never cloyingly sweet and very smooth throughout. Nice beer.

UPDATED: JAN 13, 2012 12oz bottle.Near black pour with head that didn?t stick around very long. Aroma of bready malt and smoke - flavors of roasted malt, earth, a bit of peat. Slightly sweet, body is a bit thin and ABV is very well hidden. One of the better brews from Rahr.

Bottle from Kegs and Barrels. Pours a deep brown/black with a thin ran head. The aromas are barley, chocolate, coffee. The mouthfeel is sticky with a medium body. Thus was a really nice beer! Cheers!
