COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
February 11, 2010 – cold dark and snowing. Not any ordinary snow – but instead a heavy, mean, ugly snow that spilled over the brewery. Leaving the brewery that late evening – who would have known there would be no brewery that next morning. February 12, 2010 – awoke to the sounds of twisted metal, gushing water and alarms as tons of snow came crashing down through the roof and into the brewery. We tried to save what we could and accept the loss of what we could not. As the day waned, through many a friends helping hands, a new beginning was forming. This was not the end, but alas a start to something new and wonderful. Snowmageddon is a tribute to those who stood by and supported the rebuild of Rahr and Sons Brewery. Hard work, dedication, love and passion for brewing is what makes this late winter selection so special. Snowmageddon is a limited release available annually in late February to celebrate the rebirth of a brewery. Snowmageddon will be an annual limited release, with the style changing from year to year. This first year is an imperial oatmeal stout, based on a winning recipe by a local homebrewer.

Black pour with creamy brown head. Very roasty, chocolaty, and slightly boozy aroma. Nice thick mouthfeel from the oatmeal. A lot of chocolate roast in the flavor as well. Boozy is hidden well. Balances into a clean sweet finish. ---Rated via iPhone

A great oatmeal stout! Had on tap at the hay merchant. A dark pour with very little head. A strong alcohol flavor on the aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours black in the glass. Strong aroma of mocha and dried fruit. Wonderful dark cocoa flavors mixed with espresso and Oreo cookie notes in the background. Overall, an awesome brew!

2012 bottle from bhops. Thanks, Bernard. You’ve provided me with a bunch of winter cheer this season. Initial nose is liquorice and molasses. The taste and palate don’t quite live up to the density promised by the nose, but even if it is a bit thin for an impy-stout, it is making me very comfortable this Minnesota evening. I juts spend several days in South Dakota and couldn’t find a decent beer, and escaped in front of a massive winter storm that’s dumping snow, ice and rain on the highways we were driving five hours ago. Here’s to snowmageddons when you are snugly in your own house with a nice glass of imp-stout.

Bottle from trade with crajun. Black pour, moderate head, aroma of light roasted malt and hints of fruit. Flavor is very balanced with malt, roasted malt and very light hints of cocoa. Alcohol is very well hidden. Overall pretty subtle, manages to stay interesting, but would prefer a little more flavor or complexity in this.

Bottle from secret Santa 2012 - blutt59. Pours dark brown.color with tan head. Roasted malt and chocolate aromas. Dark roasted malt flavor with some chocolate and light espresso. A hint of alcohol and slightly ashy. Full body with moderate carbonation. Thanks Bob.

22 oz. bottle from a buddy in Texas- thanks, Bryan! From a previous winter, I believe 2010. Pours a deep, pretty much opaque midnight brown with a finger of uneven off-white head, a little rocky but not leaving any lace. I can’t get a whole lot out of the aroma besides a relatively generic roast and dark chocolate character. The flavor, though, really steps up and brings some rich, layered chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, nuts, and earth. Medium-bodied, with a smooth mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Decent imperial stout but could be better.

Bomber courtesy of Bu11zeye (thanks Markus!) poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lingering ring of brown foam. Aromas of roasted malt, bakers cocoa, earthiness, dried fruit and carmel. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of roasted malt, cinnamon, bakers cocoa and light dried fruit with a smooth dry lingering spiced finish.

Wow, this is gooood! 2012 vintage, pours very dark and heavy, the color of used motor oil, with some clarity. Nice, creamy, tan, thin head. Great aromas of vanilla, sweet roasted malts, hot chocolate, plums, just a bit of alcohol and mild smoke. The taste is surprising and delightful. Sweet at first, then morphing to just a bit of smooth hops flavor.... and although I was expecting a much heavier mouthfeel, this brew was very refreshing and washes down nicely. What a great evening brew....I just wish the weather was a bit cooler and I had a fire to enjoy this brew in front of. Highly suggest you try this!

This is for the 2010 version as I aged it a bit. Still nice roasted malt aroma. Dark color that was difficult for light to shine through. No substantial head but OK lacing. Average palate and the carbonation seems to have dropped some. Roasted flavor with a rounded finish that was not too dry. Oatmeal added a fullness to it. Alcohol was barely noticeable.
