COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
February 11, 2010 – cold dark and snowing. Not any ordinary snow – but instead a heavy, mean, ugly snow that spilled over the brewery. Leaving the brewery that late evening – who would have known there would be no brewery that next morning. February 12, 2010 – awoke to the sounds of twisted metal, gushing water and alarms as tons of snow came crashing down through the roof and into the brewery. We tried to save what we could and accept the loss of what we could not. As the day waned, through many a friends helping hands, a new beginning was forming. This was not the end, but alas a start to something new and wonderful. Snowmageddon is a tribute to those who stood by and supported the rebuild of Rahr and Sons Brewery. Hard work, dedication, love and passion for brewing is what makes this late winter selection so special. Snowmageddon is a limited release available annually in late February to celebrate the rebirth of a brewery. Snowmageddon will be an annual limited release, with the style changing from year to year. This first year is an imperial oatmeal stout, based on a winning recipe by a local homebrewer.

Aroma is rich with dark chocolate, coffee, cherries and alcohol. Taste is sweet with some bitterness. Beer pours black with a tan cooled head. Gotta be one of the best from Rahr!!!

651 ml. bottle. ABV 8.5%, 55 IBU’s, 2014, per the label. Pours a medium, well retained beige head, with some lacing, over an almost opaque dark brown (SRM 30) body....nose is roasted malts, with chocolate, coffee, minimal hops, minimal esters....taste is light sweet to start, with light toffee/caramel tones, then stronger roasted malts, with coffee, chocolate note, leading to a moderate bitter finish....mouth feel, body slightly heavy of medium, slightly sticky, alcohol warmth present, slightly acid on finish. This is a pleasant beer and is obviously an Imperial Stout, because it is too sweet to be a heavy Robust Stout. It is rather simple in its presentation, and lacks many of the more complex aromas and flavors often found. Specifically, dried fruit notes are absent, and body could be a bit heavier. Adding more crystal/caramel malts might help, and perhaps elevating fermentation temperature, and/or changing yeast might create a better beer. BJCP 8/3/15/4/6

Chocolate, roasted malt, bready taste. Boozy sweet aftertaste. Light carbonation, light mouthfeel. Good stout, however nothing stands out. ---Rated via Beer Buddy

Location: Draft at Ginger Man-Houston, 1/13/14

Aroma: The aroma is heavy malt, caramel, chocolate, molasses, and some roast
Appearance: This one pours a darker brownish color with a small beige head
Flavor: The taste is much the same, heavy malty and some boozy flavor mostly
Palate: The body is medium-full, it has a sticky feel, some heat, and thicker finish
Overall Impression: I thought this was a pretty tasty one. It is on the hotter side, but it isn’t over-the-top boozy. I enjoyed it.

22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours black with a lacy, tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, some chocolate and coffee, a little dark fruits, light dough, and hints of bitterness. The flavor of this beer is good but the light fruit/spice note is a little off. Thicker texture. A pretty good imperial stout.

A great oatmeal stout! Had on tap at the hay merchant. A dark pour with very little head. A strong alcohol flavor on the aftertaste. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours black in the glass. Strong aroma of mocha and dried fruit. Wonderful dark cocoa flavors mixed with espresso and Oreo cookie notes in the background. Overall, an awesome brew!

2012 bottle from bhops. Thanks, Bernard. You’ve provided me with a bunch of winter cheer this season. Initial nose is liquorice and molasses. The taste and palate don’t quite live up to the density promised by the nose, but even if it is a bit thin for an impy-stout, it is making me very comfortable this Minnesota evening. I juts spend several days in South Dakota and couldn’t find a decent beer, and escaped in front of a massive winter storm that’s dumping snow, ice and rain on the highways we were driving five hours ago. Here’s to snowmageddons when you are snugly in your own house with a nice glass of imp-stout.

Bottle from trade with crajun. Black pour, moderate head, aroma of light roasted malt and hints of fruit. Flavor is very balanced with malt, roasted malt and very light hints of cocoa. Alcohol is very well hidden. Overall pretty subtle, manages to stay interesting, but would prefer a little more flavor or complexity in this.
