During a fierce storm on his voyage across the ocean, William Rahr could be heard yelling from the tall masted ship: "Roll on old sea! And when you are done, when the storm clouds have destroyed themselves, we will still be standing and drinking!" Today, we have created the ultimate ale for a voyage such as this: A German-Style IPA - a traditional India Pale Ale with German Influence. Our German-Style IPA is brewed with a blend of all German malts, hops, and yeast. It has a rich maltiness with both floral and spicy hop characteristics. So get ready and hang on - Stormcloud will see you through your roughest seas and straight on to smooth sailing. Editorís Note: This beer was reconfigured in 2009 with new hops and yeast.

3/7/08 - 12 oz. bottle at the Ginger Man in Dallas. Pours golden orange with amber hues, small white head, rimming. Nose is not very discernible. Taste is a touch wheaty w/ malt toffee and some spice. Hops are very mellow. Just tasty. Not like anything else. Good experience.

Nice beery aroma. Decent bite of hops in the flavor. This beer is appropriately named "Stormcloud" as the appearance is cloudy and looks more like a wheat beer than an IPA.

dark gold pour with a thin white head on top. hops and citrus on the nose. i can definitely taste the german influence on this one and it seems more like a wheat beer than an IPA.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2009 This is a re-rate 07/04/2009 since the recipe change. Pours a cloudy gold, white head. Nice aroma of some citrus, pine. Flavor is malty and fruity, some pine, with a dirty bitter. Mouth feel is medium body with high carbonation. Overall, not bad but kinda harsh, not balanced....

bottle from lumpy. light hazed yellow sticky white head. aroma is a bit different than i expected, floral and at first whiff i thought skunk, then i got a better whiff. it is a yeasty hop mix that is earthy & floral. i like the malt flavor that hides under the hops, a bit of tree bark with a less sweet caramel if that makes any sense. the hops are dominant but not overpowering. a bit of orange in the finish. spicey hop notes work well w/the light caramel. 3 6 7 4 15

I tinted yellow brew that pours with almost no head that diminishes very rapidly. The brew has little carbonation. The aroma is dirty and reminds me of a stinky closet. The taste is thick, like milk, and dominated by barley malt flavors. Iím not sure why they call this an IPA, except that it is bitter.

Pale golden color with a big foamy white head. Light spicey nose. The first taste is a pepper and spice flavor that I sure donít expect in an IPA. Banana, lemon, stale yeast and some orange rind bitterness in the finish. Lots of carbonation. This is one odd IPA. Itís an odd beer in general.

From 12 oz bottle- poured transparent yellow, bubbly head rapidly disappeared, color not very characteristic of IPAís. Some carbonation, aroma of malt, very little hop aroma. Hits the mouth with a thin body, hops do go from start to finish, but are very mild. Alot to be desired, almost an IPA with training wheels.

There are a ton of IPAs available in the US market, and this is not among the best. In fact, it is in the bottom half. Very mild and lackluster flavor make it both inoffensive and uninteresting. Poured a very light amber color. Aroma was decidedly not hoppy, and was rather malty and faint. There was some light-struck aroma and flavor (this beer is in a brown bottle and bought from a cooler). Flavor was a bit cardboard-y and offered some maltiness, but the hop that was present was very mild and not enough to hold my interest nor really balance the significant malt presence in the beer. It wasnít undrinkable, but I wonít be having it again. Not recommended. I bought this as a single from the Grapevine Market wine shop in Austin, Texas.

Cask conditioned at the fall beer tasting at the Flying Saucer in Fort Worth. Slightly warm hazy and golden with a decent head. Hop flavor and taste but somewhat weak for an IPA.
