During a fierce storm on his voyage across the ocean, William Rahr could be heard yelling from the tall masted ship: "Roll on old sea! And when you are done, when the storm clouds have destroyed themselves, we will still be standing and drinking!" Today, we have created the ultimate ale for a voyage such as this: A German-Style IPA - a traditional India Pale Ale with German Influence. Our German-Style IPA is brewed with a blend of all German malts, hops, and yeast. It has a rich maltiness with both floral and spicy hop characteristics. So get ready and hang on - Stormcloud will see you through your roughest seas and straight on to smooth sailing. Editorís Note: This beer was reconfigured in 2009 with new hops and yeast.

Had it out of a bottle, poured a nice frothy head and a strong hop taste with a good bitter finish!

Large bubble carbonation. Nose of wet hop but not strong. Teases with mild fruit up front, followed by prolonged bitter. Iím a hop head, but this is just bitter. As it warms, a little more malt to balance.

What looked like a very good looking ale, turned out to be a hard swallow. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2015 Floral, spicy hops and grain in the aroma. The taste is similar, with muted (for an IPA) hops and a good malt backbone. Dry finish of chewed-out peppermint gum. Goes down easy.

Clean sweet apricot nose. Fruity metallic with a decent lingering bitterness. Ok. ---That dog will hunt!

I enjoy many IPAís but this one is slightly different. I love the aroma as it is hoppy but you can smell the grains in this one, too. Its nice, like the smell of a brewery. To me, it smells fresh. The flavor is mild with a combined hops/malty flavor. It is one of the more enjoyable beers I have tasted and as with all, it is best from the tap. A great one for the tours they have on Saturdays.

It is not your typical strong ipa. It is probably a good beer to introduce someone to IPAs. I will agree that this is a good barbeque beer. Keep it cold.

Stormcloud is a clear-bodied bright orange-colored brew with an off-white head thatís kept thin, but steady, by moderate carbonation. It has a sweet, hoppy aroma thatís gentle, but still stands up to the style. In the mouth itís a little creamy. The bubbles from its healthy head and airy body pop on your lips and in your mouth a little. I expected a harsher hop punch from this, but itís actually very gentle. I know many American Pale Ales that are heftier than this. You can definitely tell that their attempt to Germanize this IPA was a success. Its flavor reminds me more of a German lager than an IPA, and its body also puts on such an act. A hint of bitterness remains in the finish, but not enough, in my opinion, to hold up to what I expect of an IPA. Donít get me wrong - itís a great beer. It should probably be more properly labeled, however. If it was, youíd go in to this beer with a completely different set of expectations and would probably end up enjoying this beer more. Then again, thatís assuming youíre a hop head. Overall, this is a very smooth and gentle IPA with an interesting twist that should be acknowledged when drinking this beer to fully appreciate what the brewersí intentions were.
