During a fierce storm on his voyage across the ocean, William Rahr could be heard yelling from the tall masted ship: "Roll on old sea! And when you are done, when the storm clouds have destroyed themselves, we will still be standing and drinking!" Today, we have created the ultimate ale for a voyage such as this: A German-Style IPA - a traditional India Pale Ale with German Influence. Our German-Style IPA is brewed with a blend of all German malts, hops, and yeast. It has a rich maltiness with both floral and spicy hop characteristics. So get ready and hang on - Stormcloud will see you through your roughest seas and straight on to smooth sailing. Editor’s Note: This beer was reconfigured in 2009 with new hops and yeast.

Bottle [12oz] c/o Zeugil. Pours a slightly hazy orange-copper with an average size diminishing off-white head. Aroma of hops, a slight vegetal note, caramel malt and somewhat bready notes. Flavour of resiny hops and caramel malt, not much else. Average bitter finish. Average bodied. It’s just good, not great.

Bottle. Not big and hoppy enough for an American IPA, too light in body for a British IPA. It could fit as a boring American pale ale, though not a very smooth one. Not the worst beer, but not one to seek out.

Bottle during Worthington IPA Throwdown. Makes a little more sense now that I read the deScription. Not your typical IPA: aroma had malt, coffee? and perfume. Light hops in the flavor plus some nice bitterness. Almost creamy too. Interesting take on the style.

Ale pours a little thin with mild hop aroma; taste is pleasantly bitter and German malt influence is present; ok drinkable but not great IPA

Bottle:   Amberish, cloudy, huge fluffy off-white head, nice lacing.   Hoppy aroma, slightly dank and basement like.   A little vegetable like right up front, pale hoppiness.   Kinda smells a bit like turkey taco farts.   Don’t ask...   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, albeit it is fairly smooth.   Backside is a little cardboardish and musty.   Not a real sharp IPA, but tiz alright.   Not overly hoppy either.   Probably more like a PNW Pale Ale.   Thanks for the bottle Bill!

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2011 IPA blasphomy! Not sure if it was the 2009 reconfiguring or what but I did not enjoy this beer. I realize most english style IPAs are much more subdued then their West Coast bretheren, but come on! Where is the flavor and aroma? Subpar at best. In one work - meh.

Pint on draft during a brewery tour. This was a decent beer but for an IPA i was expecting a little more hop favor and aroma. Maybe the brewery doesn’t dry hop??? The malt was at a good low level for an IPA. Pours gold with white cream head - a little hazy. Good dry bitterness on the palate.

12 oz bottle courtesy of Cavie. Hazy dark gold pour with a firm white head. Aroma is... pizza? Very doughy malts, and for some reason I get tomatoes in the nose. Not very much hop presence for an IPA. Slightly funky taste. Bready malts and a piney bitter finish. Mouthfeel isnt bad, light-medium body with good carb. Not awful, but a little bit weird. Not sure that a "German-style IPA" was primed for the best results. Tastes like an overly hopped Oktoberfest.
