During a fierce storm on his voyage across the ocean, William Rahr could be heard yelling from the tall masted ship: "Roll on old sea! And when you are done, when the storm clouds have destroyed themselves, we will still be standing and drinking!" Today, we have created the ultimate ale for a voyage such as this: A German-Style IPA - a traditional India Pale Ale with German Influence. Our German-Style IPA is brewed with a blend of all German malts, hops, and yeast. It has a rich maltiness with both floral and spicy hop characteristics. So get ready and hang on - Stormcloud will see you through your roughest seas and straight on to smooth sailing. Editor’s Note: This beer was reconfigured in 2009 with new hops and yeast.

What looked like a very good looking ale, turned out to be a hard swallow. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Rated based on notes taken 23 Aug 2012 -- an okay IPA. Focuses on bitterness and crisp body rather than the "IPA experience". It’ll do but there’s better out there.

355 ml bottle. Unclear brownish orange, fine tan foam settles and mostly fades. Milder aroma of Noble hop and caramel. Well malted caramel/toffee taste, moderate herbal/floral/spiced hop, some citrus. Average carbonation, light-medium body. Nice enough for a British style IPA made with German hops and brewed in Texas. LBW (Lagerboys Be Wary)

Aroma of biscuit and floral hops. Taste adds slightly bitter citrus. More interesting malt influence than most IPAs.

Hazy amber with a foamy white head. Earthy grape-like fruitiness with a reisny hop and a little earthy grapefruit. Interesting nose. Rich caramalt flavor with some light grape tones like it was wine barrel aged, a little tree fruit note, grapefruity citrus earthiness, and finishing with a cracker and toffee maltiness and yet also with with this white wine and pseudo woody tone. Interesting and complex.

From bottle. Picked it up at Spec’s on Eastchase in Fort Worth on the cheap. Looks good in the glass; clear copper with a bit of white head that is gone about halfway down. Nose is not particularly pungent--some biscuit malt but not much else. Nice bitterness, slightly sour toward the end. Harsh finish, but in a good way. Solid, but far from spectacular. Rahr doesn’t break any new ground here, but it’s a nice part of their portfolio.
