For a black lager, this reminded me a lot of a porter. Nice, thick palate and a taste that was all cream and coffee with a good bit of chocolate to boot. Don’t remember too much about it other than that I greatly enjoyed it and look forward to getting more now that it’s no longer at Oktoberfest and I can see straight again.

Great Dark beer Out of Texas. Served this after asking for ’the darkest beer in the biggest glass’ in San Antonio. Tastes much like a stout, all the dark roasty flavors without the alcohol finish. Never one for Black Lagers but Ugly Pug has become a regular in my drinking collection.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at the brewery This black lager poured a very dark brown color with a decent tan head. The aroma was of roasted malts. The body was just short of a medium body. The carbonation was average. The taste of roasted malt was evident from the beginning. A very balanced beer. This beer was also enjoyed downtown at the Flying Saucer.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pretty nice looking beer,, kinda reddish-dark brown in color, fairly clear but still dark enough to where it’s hard to see very far through it, with a nice light brown creamy head that lasted a bit and left sheets of lace.
Aroma and flavors are somewhat malty, with a slightly detectable roastiness, but not bitter astringent roasts like a stout, and maybe a touch of bread and dark fruit, Not a lot of hops, but a slight sweetness comes through.
Somewhat brown-ale like overall, but lighter in body, which is more lager-like.and just a little thin.
Overall it’s not too far off the mark for the style, although not outstanding.

Comes out of the tap a deep, warm sable with a fairly thick tan head. Roast malt aroma has strong smoky, earthy and nutty notes plus a chocolaty hint. Flavor continues the roast malt theme plus nutty, earthy and subtle chocolate components. Firm texture has a strong and persistent fizz. This dog’s gonna hunt all right.

Mostly black pour. Medium khaki head. Roasty aroma, but pretty subtle. Flavor is also quite roasty with a hint of charcoal. Pretty heavy body. Clean finish.

This black lager has an almost porter like taste. It has a strong aroma of coffee and chocolate. It is smooth with just a little bite.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Better than I remember. Roasted dark malt aroma. Dark brown color with brown head. Above average weight on the palate with normal carbonation. Nice roasted malt taste up front that lingers. It reminded me of some brown ales. Maybe even a little nuttiness. A little heavy when coupled with food but surprisingly good.
