Ugly Pug is a schwarzbier, or black lager. But the real story is its name. Fritz saw his mother-in-law’s pug, Oscar, lounging in a chair and he (Fritz) shouted, “What an ugly pug!” Everyone laughed. Your’re right – they were drinking a test batch that night.

Thanks to crajun for the trade! The body is a clear very dark brown that hides beneath a frothy, chunky tan head. The aroma is malty, nutty toasted malts, maybe a touch of chocolate or coffee from the roast malts. No hop aromas. The flavor is nutty and sweet, again no hop bitterness that stands apart from the balance. I’d like a bit more body, but this is still a nice drinkable beer.

Had at the Great Arkansas Beer Festival 2014. Pours dark brown to black. Thin bodied. Roasty flavor with slight coffee and burnt malt. Not bad.

Draft - Chocolate and caramel. Dark black brown with a nice beige head. Chocolate and lots of caramel, almost like a Rolo. I quite liked this, but have a hard time calling this a black lager.

Bottle. Pours a black color with a big head that fades rather quickly to bits of lacing. Aroma of roasted malts witha bit of coffee and grain. Taste of roasted malt coffee hint of chocolate and grain. Malty bitterness and finishes with a bit of lingering coffee. Fairly light body smooth and has nice flair. Enjoyable beer.

12 ounce bottle pours almost black, solid burned malt taste, kind of hoppy but missing something that would really make it pop, not bad but not really good

12 oz. bottle thanks to Phatdog1. Dark brown nearly black color. White Head vanished quickly. Nose of coffee and burnt caramel. Hints of roasted barley. Really thin watery body with a thin texture. Nothing really wrong with it but it needs something to make it stand out. And the body needs to be beefed up. Much better out there in terms of style.

Bottle. Pours a black color and the taste is forgettable. Very thin and not much to it. Very average for a "craft beer" ----Hophaze out

12 oz bottle. Pours a medium, well retained light beige head, over a clear brown (SRM 30) body.....nose is light cereal grains, with roasted malt tones including cocoa chocolate, faint hints of rubber, minimal esters and hops.....taste is light cocoa, hints of chocolate, minimal esters, light hops with light bitter finish.....mouth feel light of medium, carbonation low with light acid finish. This needs to be maltier with more oomph in the malt backbone, and the light chemical aroma is off putting. BJCP 6/3/10/4/5
