[4330-20120312] Tap. Lightly burnt wood roast malt aroma. Black body with a long-lasting foamy dark brown head. More roasted malt in the flavour is balanced nicely with some wood and chocolate chips. Full body. Delicious! Great balance, not too much roast or other notes. (7/4-/9/4/17) 4.1

Bottle sample at Brewer’s Plate (Apr 18, 2012). Very dark almost-black body with a deep tan head. Dry roast aroma with lots of coffee & cocoa. Big roasty flavor with charred malt up front, dark chocolate in the middle, and back of throat coffee tartness to finish. Quite good!

Very solid stout. Pours inky, velvet black with a small beige head. Aroma is big, rich roasted malts, light coffee. Taste is again big roasted malts, some smoke and coffee. Nice velvet mouthfeel and great for a 6% beer.

UPDATED: APR 18, 2013 Rerate from a bottle. Pour black as coal with a tight dark brown head. Rich cocoa and roast aroma with notes of licorice and some softly savoury character. A bit of rich molasses and some chewy sweetness. Lots of dark chocolate. The muddiness that I got last time is gone and this is a much nice pint than that one. Lots of roasted malt on the finish. Pretty nice robust stout. Tap at Volo. Deep black pour with a tight brown head. The aroma is of milk chocolate, cocoa, malted milk and a little bit of light roast. As it warms up, I get a bit of an odd dullness that is really hard to identify. A touch of espresso as well that is pretty nice. There is a little bit of berryish character that I enjoy but the palate is surprisingly light and there is a little bit of a papery flavour that I could probably do without as well. There is a roasted grain tartness and a little bit of bitterness. It starts out strong, but it kind of limps along at the end. 6 4 6 3 11

On tap at The Kick Off. Pours an opaque dark brown with a small dark tan head. Aroma is fairly simple, roasted malts, a little coffee, a little dark chocolate. Flavour comes on a nice oily palate, slightly charred, slightly smokey dark roasted malts. Dry finish, slightly astringent. What I would expect from a standard Dry Irish Stout. Always interesting to try this style when it’s not on Nitro. Pretty good, though I wouldn’t seek it out specifically.

On tap at the Judge. Notes indicate 10/20/12.Half pint, as the keg had blown. Very dark brown, almost black, with a thick creamy mocha cap. Very roasty, with a touch of smoke and lots of black coffee. Dry, with only a touch of sweetness, medium bitterness. Fairly full bodied and dense, creamy, lingering roasty bitterness on the end. Very good overall.
