A full bodied golden Pale Ale which pours with a linen white medium density head leaving spider web lace on the glass. On the palate the flavour is sweet fruity malts up front (apricot, mango) with a bit of candy, and slight grassy notes which fall away to reveal a hint of biscuit with rather pleasant grapefruit and perfume undertones. This is a hop bomb, there is no doubt. To the nose there is a mild malt aroma which accentuates the robust floral bouquet which is derived from the hops.

Medium full bodied ale with pleasant lingering hop finish.

6.8 % alcohol by volume, IBU’s 46.6

473ml can, amber color, with a white head, nice floral candied lemon, grapefruit peel, leafy hoppy nose, with some light piney, coniferous accents, within a faint toasted, caramel malt aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a nice sweet toasted, caramel malty, flowery candied lemon, grapefuit peel, leafy, minty hop character, with a piney, lemon marmalade flavour, leading towards a candyish cirtusy, leafy, grassy, piney hop bitterness finish.

Amber color, clean, with small head. Light aroma of malt and hop. The flavor is nice, crispy malt (unusual), with a touch of cereals; the mouthfeel is lean, but there is an apparent light sweetness; good bitterness, with delicate fruits. Balanced.
Fresh and pleasant.

Pours a slightly hazy orange with a two-finger head of dense white foam. Minimal staying power or lacing. Aroma is light, with some citrus and maltiness. Big carbonation with a somewhat abrasive bitter taste that carries to the back of the tongue. Not overly floral, simply bitter, with some pine notes. Short bitter aftertaste backed up by some caramel malts and a medium complexity. An OK IPA, but not up to standard when compared to some other North American pales.

Note: 5+/10

473 ml.

Can - 500ml. Amber body with a fair white foamy/creamy head. Malty/hoppy aroma with fruity hints. Its sharp hoppy taste carries grassy and citrusy notes. Ends with a long, sharp bitter finish. Good IPA.

473ml can. Brassy orange colour, slightly hazy, moderate white head. Active carbonation. Floral and citrus hops up front in the smell, with a sweet malt balance. Not a particularly strong aroma. Mild grapefruity taste with some earthy bitterness in the back and toasted grain. While not super bitter it is tasty .

Canned 473ml in OCB Discoverer. Cloudy golden with big foamy head that disappears oh too quickly. Decent hoppy aroma with some fruits- peach and appricot. taste is malty, cookie doughy, and hoppy enough for a decent IPA. Pretty good stuff.

Cannette 473 ml. 6.55. Couleur ambrée, mousse beige pâle. Arôme de malt caramel, herbes et toffee. En bouche, malt, caramel, un peu de houblon. Plus une Pale Ale qu’une IPA. Bonne.

(Originally written for the Spring 2010 issue of TAPS Magazine.) When sending in beer for review, it’s standard practice for breweries to provide TAPS with several bottles for each writer in case of breakage or other problems. Normally, this precautionary measure proves to be unnecessary, but with Dead Elephant Ale, I was glad to have three bottles to try, since the first one I opened seemed to have been hit with a heavy dose of diacetyl, giving the beer an unpleasant strong buttery character. The other two bottles, however, contained an enjoyable ale with a burnished orange body, creamy white head, and aromas and flavours of tropical fruit, caramel and fresh citric hops. I’d like to see a bit more body, and perhaps a touch of restraint in the finish where the hops are a bit astringent, but it’s still a nice pint. I’ll just have to hope that the butter bomb I found in bottle number one was an anomaly.
