3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 eaglefan538 (2726) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - OCT 5, 2006
UPDATED: OCT 26, 2006 Sampled on draft at the HPWBC tasting room. The appearance was decent, dark brown, some cloudiness, but not extreme, the head about average, maybe a little weak? The aroma was coffee and roasted malts, hard to detect wheatiness underneath. The flavor also seemed to have a bit too much smoke/roast and dark malts, to the point where the wheat wasn’t as prominent as it could have been. Not a bad beer (I grabbed a sixer of it), but not among my favorites within style. Re-rate: from the sixer I picked up, not much has changed. The clove/phenolic character increased a bit (along with some carbonation), but this thing looked subpar, tasted too smoked, almost peat smoked, and had only minor wheat dryness as an accent. Too strong on the roasted and smoked malts.
3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 hophead75 (2005) - Largo, Florida, USA - AUG 10, 2006
bottle. Deep amber with a very small off white head, carbonation very light. Aroma is of light chocolate, caramel, banana, and spices. Taste is about the same. The carbonation was very light on this beer, knocking off a few points. Second six pack I bought from Ramstein and both were very undercarbonated. Would be much better with appropriate Co2 saturation.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 hightechbill (1) - USA - JUL 13, 2006 does not count
Usually drink ales. I tried a few wheat beers in the past, but this one is exceptional. Great flavor with a nice brown color.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 hopdog (6943) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 27, 2006
Sampled from growler provided by weeare138. Poured a dark brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of wheat, cloves, caramel, chocolate and a little on the musty side. Tastes of wheat, chocolate, and caramel. I found the tastes to be on the lighter and thinner side with a thin body.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 weeare138 (936) - Collegeville, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 26, 2006
Thanks to the wife, K.I. for grabbing this at The Drafting Room-Exton for me...
Appears a hazy red toned brown with a thick white head that fades into a collar. Scattered lacing is left all over the glass.
Smell is of light dusty cocoa, clove, and some wheat with light caramel in there.
Taste is of te same aromas.
Mouthfeel is watery, thin, cocoa powder and cloves and sticking to the front of the tongue until finally dying out.
3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 egajdzis (4550) - Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 26, 2006
Poured a brown amber color with a small, off white head that left spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast, caramel, banana, nuts, and some light spices. Taste of caramel malts, chocolate, earth, light banana, citrus fruits, but a rather thin mouthfeel overall.
2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 harmfuldrunk (288) - New Jersey, USA - MAR 18, 2006
roasty dark beer nice, tastes ok really not sure why they say classic wheat when it is dark and does taste more like a dark wheat, besides the obvious its just a little too watery and weak for me. It is decent I am interested in there stronger beers.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 willblake (2587) - Bel Air, Maryland, USA - NOV 29, 2005
11.29.05 12oz bottle. I must admit to my surprise when I started pouring this stuff into the glass as I had no idea it was a dunkelweizen when I bought it. I also was surprised at how flat and lifeless it appeared, luckily I was able to log in and confirm that the beer was as it should be, or at least, as it normally appears.
The deep brown pour sits motionless below an oil slick smooth surface, nary a hint of carbonation after the initial vigorous pour. The aroma is all subtleties with bold burnt caramel, sun dried grass, charcoal, and burnt toast. There’s a nuisance of miniscule and haphazard smells ranging from clay to dried herbs. The flavor seems to highlight the burnt with an ashy astringency and chalky lingering palate. I detect little or no fruity yumminess, and only the slightest hint of dark, bitter cocoa. More subtleness attacks with quick breaths of molasses, tobacco, dried anise seed. No, I am neither rapt with spice nor engaged by complex malts. With temp, some tingling carbonation becomes present on the palate, livening the body just enough to improve the drinkability. It did go well with grilled sausages. Alas, I’m not convinced that a beer should focus on being subtle when it hasn’t a strong leg to stand on.
