Our first Small Batch Series release is an Oak-aged Rye OPA. It is a resurrection of UNO, our one-year anniversary beer released on draft in November, 2011. We took our signature Oatmeal Pale Ale, added rye to the grain bill, and aged it in oak barrels for a month. The resulting beer has a soft malt sweetness highlighted with spicy and earthy rye malt, toasted coconut, soft pineapple, apricot, citrus, floral hop flavor and aroma with a dry finish of oak.

Bottle, aged since release at 38F. Nose -- wow. That’s funky. Barnyard, smoke, yeast, citrus, and just a touch of acetic. The beer is still gorgeous; hazy gold with a light creamy head that lasts a surprisingly long time. On the tongue, the bitterness is much more forefront, set off by a deep lemony acidity that keeps the flavor clean. No muddiness or sweetness, this is brawny and substantial with a tight, distinct, and well-defined flavor. It’s almost meaty in its strength. Finish is long and as dynamic as a well-worn leather jacket. An astonishing experience.

Bottle... Lightly-hazed amber pour with a thin, creamy, white head. Woody, mildly funky nose. Medium-bodied and astringent with buzzing carbonation. The flavor provides a decent balance of moderate bitterness and light acidity. Crisp, Sahara-dry finish. Bottle courtesy of biggsbowler!

Pours a clear gold color with white head. Spice, oak, light fruits, and floral notes on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with more light fruit.

Bottle from Rosebud Butternuts. Pours copper with a foamy beige head. Aroma of tripel fruit esters with oak and a hint of rye. Med body or better. Pineapple, light stone fruit, oak, mild rye, and the flavors sort of rotate. Really firm flavors. So woody it approaches sour. Quite tasty.

375ml bottle thanks to Errl. The rubbery wax on this bottle was quite resilient. Aroma is musty and dry with a fruity floral presence. Taste is funky and floral. Has a nice dry sweetness. Really not what I was expecting, but its really quite good.

From 12.7 oz wax top bottle. Poured in a Chimay goblet. Pours copper with significant head and lace. Aroma of oak, sour fruit, slight alcohol, barnyard. Significant mouthfeel and carbonation. Flavors of a funky mix of oak, tannins, white grapefruit rind, white pepper, rye, leather, dried apricot. Overall big, bold, slightly mouth puckering with spices. Bitter, dry finish.

375ml bottle: Thanks Kaggie! The first think I liked about this was how easy it was to get the wax off to pop the cap! The beer pours a fairly clear amber color. There was a small off-white head that doesn’t linger long. An interesting aroma. It is befinitely old and musty smelling. Pineapple, citrus and oak dominate the nose. A bit of rye and spices in there also. The taste is good. Definitely dry and oaky flavors. Rye, some malts, spices, hints of fruit (pineapple and apricot), and a few other subtle items. Very nice!
