COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This vintage ale undergoes a 3 hour boil to create a complex layer of malt character including caramel, toffee, ripe fruit, and leather. The floral and earth-toned Kent Goldings hops add a soft background of spice giving depth to the malt flavors and providing an overall balance. It has been aged for 6 months in oak barrels to allow time for this big beer to mature and mellow. At 10% ABV, it’s made to be laid down like a fine wine. If stored properly this barleywine should keep well for upwards of 10 years. Drink one now, save more for later!

Bottle thanks to my secret Santa! Pours a hazy amber brown with a large tan head that dissipates to the slowly to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has a good amount of light fruit and a hint of grassiness with a strong sweet grain and oak backbone. Flavor is similar with a grass note up front that finishes with sweet grains, oak and light fruits.

Pours burnt orange with a sizable white head. Lots going on here -- yeast, oak, brown sugar, dark fruit, spices. Definitely one to revisit again later.

Bottle from pikapp327. Light orange pour with a big white head. Pour is a little cloudy. This is because even though the bottle says not to disturb the yeast, Travis poured it all in my glass. Aroma is caramel and spice with yeast. Taste is way yeasty, sweet, sticky, and booze.

Aged nearly 3 months (bottled October 8, 2012): Like other Small Batch bottles (at least fresh), this is a very well-carbonated bottle, producing a very thick, dense and billowy cream-colored head that just doesn’t go away. Its body is a cloudy, bright orange color with a touch of brown- amber. The aroma is a little too yeasty and soured for my nose, with some strong floral and fruit notes trying to make me think that this is a Belgian, especially with its earthy and woody undertones. Yes, this seriously needs to mature. In the mouth, again, way too fruity. I can’t get over how Belgian this tastes. The yeast is pretty much in your face, with a hint of toffee, banana, and light spices carrying the otherwise woody, soft-bodied beer through to the finish. It’s honestly a little uncomfortable at this age and slightly unpleasant just from its strong, yeasty characteristics. It’s so strongly-controlled by the yeast that you can’t even taste the high alcohol content. Way too rough around the edges right now.

The beer pours an ugly brown color with a small head. The aroma has a lot of brown sugar in it, as well as some heavy caramel and toffee malt. The flavor has a good bit of oak and brown sugar, as well as some dark fruit, toffee and caramel. As the beer warms I start to get a butter-like quality as well as some funky brett notes, which may be the early signs of an infection (as has been reported in other reviews).
