COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Small Batch Series No. 4 is our most exciting small batch release to date, and one that utilizes both aspects of our unique ďbrewstilleryĒ. This beer takes our Mesquite Smoked Porter brewed to 10% ABV and ages it for 10 months in our own Texas bourbon barrels! Small Batch Series No. 4 carries a sumptuous nose of sweet oak, mesquite smoke, dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow and vanilla, along with flavors of dark bittersweet cocoa laced with sea salt, smoke, vanilla, and caramel. While this warming winter release is heavenly to sip now, it will age and mellow nicely for up to 10 years if stored carefully.

Pours very dark almost black with large light brown head out of bottle. Great chocolate aroma with an oaky flavor. Overall a good beer but I really expected more from this limited batch. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught at Black Star. Low carbonation in pour. Some chocolate and roast. Thin to medium body. Some oak and vanilla. Finishes with smoke as it warms. Ok.

(Draught) clear deep brown, deep tan head. Nose of vanilla, milk chocolate, graham cracker, light alcohol, barrel, and whiskey. Taste of light grape, sawdust, maybe infected, not horrible, grape jam, unique and linger of vanilla.

Pours nicely dark brown with a fast dissipating brown head. Nose is tart and funky like a nice 3F or Cantillon-but wait-this is supposed to be a smoked porter in bourbon barrels. The nose gives it away. This beer has a few faint characteristics of the original beer. Now to take it like it is-I like the funk sourness with the warm alcohol burn. Thickish mouth. A black imperial lambic?? Not sure how to rate this as the original intent is gone but itís still a unique and flavorful beer. Iíll rate it for itís taste now.

Black with a fluffy tan head. Aroma of wood, smoke, and bourbon. The taste is sweet, woody, and full of bourbon and smoke. A little dry, medium bodied, and a little fizzy.

Pours black with a small ring of foam for a head. Aroma is certainly eventful with notes of smoke, oak, herbs, faint coffee and mildly dark chocolate, subtle medicinal bourbon, and MAYBE some slight hints of sourness, but I might just be imagining that. Flavor of wood, sweet charred bourbon, dark chocolate, coffee and smoke starts things off right. Hints at maltiness and astringency in the same moment. I get the sea salt mention in the description. FInishes with the bourbon and smoke combining for a dry effect, flavor is burnt and herbal but not too bitter. Nearly heavy bodied and not too hot, this is easy drinking, and the carbonation is suitably light. Again, I really canít tell if thereís signs of infection this time, but I donít want to take the time to find out. Itís good now, and Iím happy to report that about something from Ranger Creek.

It has an extremely dark brown, practically black color, an opaque and solid-looking brew with a thick, dense and foamy light-medium brown colored head. The aroma is delicious... you can smell a bourbon spiciness with roasted malts from a foot away, then up close the nose is mostly comprised of a wooden funk, earthy and softly bourbony with light chocolate. In the mouth itís meaty and smooth, with a strong bourbon kick in the center of the mouth and a slightly sour, pungent effect that lingers in the cheeks in the finish. The flavor itself is roasted and sour - maybe more wood than bourbon, but a fairly nice balance with the malts. It does seem a little lacking on the palate as far as the malt profile goes, but since most of that will fade away with aging anyway, this may turn out to be a pretty good beer to age. Iím probably going to drink this again at two years old, maybe three if I forget.

My favorite of the series so far. I love the regular version of their porter but this amped up and aged version is all that and more. The extra oak and vanilla blend in nicely and the mesquite seems even stronger. Will definitely be stashing a few of these away later.
