Mini Belgian Bottle in a trade from Jamil. What a weird beer, but boy, did I enjoy the experience. Cherry, banana tart scent with a hoppy, musty funk. The scent presented contradictions and complexities. The pour was a burnt orange, bronze, with a white head to ring. Light feel, slightly bubbly, with a dry finish. The taste was an odd mix, first oat and hop with a musty, almost basement, funk, then the oak came through, and the rye shined on the finish, a nice compliment. Much like Neil Young’s singing, at first this beer is an odd and uncomfortable experience, but then somehow, you get used to it and end up loving it.

375 ml bottle sent by a buddy in League City- thanks again, Bryan! Pours a hazy orange color with a small, soft, creamy off-white head that sticks around the whole way down. Aroma of oak, apricots, oats, rye, floral hops, caramel malts, orange citrus, and a wee bit of funk. The flavor follows the same lines. This treatment on this beer gives it an almost saison-like quality, like a big barrel-aged saison. Medium-bodied, with a spicy, juicy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Really nice, unique beer.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 5000 (4967) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - SEP 27, 2012
Bottle:   Dark straw, orangish, dirty and hazy, moderate foamy off-white head, clingy lacing.   Woody nose, a little tropical, make that a lot tropical.   Otherwise it seems citrusy and coconut like.   Very woody and mealy up front.   While the aroma is rather nice, it comes across a bit more meek and deflated.   On the tongue its very woody, oakish, but without all the fruity nuance.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, a bit bubbley, not at all rich like I was expecting for the style.   The maltiness and body weren’t there.   Finishes quick, strong oak lingers.   The nose lead on that this would be a wonderful fruity type woody aged beer, but the fruitiness never materialized and I was left with some plain ole beer that sat on oak.   Not bad, but damn... I wished that nose had delivered in flavor and body.   Thanks Bill for this one!
