COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A long-lost style originally from Eastern Europe. The combination of wheat, pilsner, and cherrywood smoked malts with a lactic and a traditional fermentation creates a strange but captivating brew.

Draft at Rapp. Smells awful but tastes fantastic. Unique twist on sour. Guess style been around forever but never had a smoked sour until today. Just don’t smell and drink away!

Perplexing... It’s smoked an it’s sour... It doesn’t look smokey... Sample pour of light yellow with little to no head. Aroma is smoked hickory, camp fire, and faint citric notes. Intriguing. Flavor is smoked finish but starts sour, tart also in the finish. I’m still picking up the smoke after a minute. I dig it.

Draft - Woody, light smoke, lime and lacto. Cloudy yellow with a thin white head. Bacon meets slat and vinegar. I love it, Gose/Rauch.

@Brewers Ball 2014. a nice smoky aroma with a slightly tangy aftertaste. very nice.

Just enough smoke and the right amount of sour to off-set it. I don’t normally like smoked beers, but I love sours. This one was a good combination of the two.

22oz bottle. Poured a golden color with a larger sized head. Carbonated & fizzy body with a dry finish. I was getting band-aids and could not get past that. Smoked meats, tart, and fruity ... but oh no, no band-aids please.

Sampled draught as part of a flight at the brewpub on January 19, 2014.
Listed as 5.8% ABV.
Cloudy golden color, no head. Salty, acidic, wood taste. Fizzy mouthfeel, very very low bitterness. Acidic, wood scent.

My Bottom Line:
Apples and wooden smoke move into lemons for a thought-provoking Lichtenhainer.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam crowns the cloudy blond.
-The fruitiness is also reminiscent of green pears.
-There is an unfortunate rubbery note in the nose.
-Tartness appears bolder in this one than their Berliner Weisse’s.
-Carbonation is rather soft and drinkability quite high.
-Kudos to them for trying this obscure style out! Adventurous breweries like Rapp are those who will make the style live on, even if their rendition is not entirely perfect.

650mL bottle supplied by hopscotch—many thanks! To long-stemmed tulip, it pours a citrine earth yellow with which a foamy white head three fingers in length stood. Gradually decreased to 1 finger; obtained just under five minutes of warming. Aromas of straw, bamboo, lemon zest, toffee, spelt, tobacco, and pinenuts. Tastes of farmhouse yeast, bong water, stale ginger beer, lactic acid, and dank hops, with the tiniest hints of peat moss, cucumber, and chamomile by swallow. Medium bodied. My brother, whom I shared the bottle with, unpretentiously enjoyed Rapp’s Lichtenheiner but declared it was perhaps too sour. I could definitely see what he meant.
