Tring Mowing Devil

Formerly brewed at Tring
Tring, England
Style: Bitter | Ratings: 1 | Special Seasonal | Alcohol: 4.2%
Another one of our three "Name the Beer" competition winners, this time submitted by Rupert Wallis. The Mowing Devil or Strange News out of Hartford-Shire, (Hertfordshire), was the title of an illustrated woodblock printed pamphlet. Published in 1678 it tells the story of a farmer who swore that rather than pay the price demanded by a labourer to mow his field, he would rather see the Devil mow it instead. That night the field is said to have been seen engulfed in flame. The following morning, rather than scorched grass the field was found perfectly mowed. The pamphlet and accompanying illustration have often been cited as being among the first recorded cases of crop circles by cereologists.
