Corrosion of Conformity brewday, our fifth collaboration with Raw, went well in sub-zero Staveley… the mash tun was full to capacity with pale maris otter, a sack each of wheat malt and melanodin, and just a kilo of carafe for a touch more colour. 10kg of dark muscovado went in the underback.
We then added Palisade as first wort hop, followed by summit at boil. In a departure from our usual method, we added 30 and 15 minute hop charges, a mix of summit, palisade, bramling cross and sorachi. The flame-off charge was a further 4kg of the same hops.
Rusty in colour, with a colossal 197IBU of bitterness and fruity hops offset by the rummy muscovado and the secret ingredient to be added to the fermenter. Cascade pellets also going in the fermenter for good measure! It may be brown, but it certainly ain’t twiggy!

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Cask @ The Grove, Hudds. The pour’s a deep hazy amber color with a small white head. The aroma’s of tea, sugar-coated branch. Dank tropical fruit and pissy wood. Aggressive, somewhat funky hop aromas. The taste is strongly bitter. This apparently has booze-soaked raisins as the ’special ingredient’. The raisin really comes through on the taste, and gives an almost funky sourness to the finish. Very sweet tropical fruit salad. Lightly cheesy finish. Full, syrupy body. Light carbonation. Overall, I’m not a huge fan of this. I love Steel City’s creativity, but this one’s a bit all over the place.

Cask, Derby Winter Fest 13. Golden brown with a thin head. Aromas are toffee with grapefruit and pine. Grapefruit with marmalade and spiced oranges. Marmalade with lemon tea. Flavours are lemon and pineapple with woody notes. Grain with dry tea and fruity hops. Decent.

At Hucknall Beer Festival - WOW! This was bitter! Looked good, nice and clear with a decent boozy nose. Then the bitterness hits, the rum soaked raisins are quite apparent. Took some getting used to, a very sour beer.
