GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 18, 2006 Bottle shared with HogTownHarry - courtesy of him. Ruby-brown colour with a big tan head. Aroma is a touch stale (often the case with UK beers we pick up at the Premier), but holds some nice roasty notes, with a hint of chocolate and nuts. Body is thin, a but disappointing. Flavour is pleasant - good roastiness, the expected coffee & chocolate notes, and some smoke in the tart, dry finish. With more body this could be a really solid porter rather than just an average one. HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Feb 7, 2006 Bottle (500ml). Shared with GregClow, my bottle. Poured deep cloudy reddish-brown with a large light brown pancake batter head. Nice roasty aroma of mild coffee beans, dark and milk chocolate, yeast, malteesers, some pungent hops, crushed chestnuts - a hint of bottle metal as it warms. Taste is smooth chocolate, a bit chalky with hardwood smoke, some tart, almost sour fruit - quite mild, really. Mouthfeel is slightly sour, acidic - watery; this isn’t bad, but nothing memorable - smokey and average. TheGrandMaster (1846), Auckland, New Zealand Jan 21, 2006 Pint pulled at The Railway in Putney (London), a dark brown with a good sized frothy head. Roasted caramal aroma, but not that strong. Flavour is a little sweet, of caramal mostly. A tartness at first in the mouth with followed but a very nice coffee bitterness. skortila (2879), Bunnik, Netherlands Jan 8, 2006 Aroma of roasted coffee malts, some chocolate and a bit fruit. Black coloured with a brown head. Taste is watery, coffee malty, slightly fruity. Sweet and bitter. Easy drinkin, but not really great. harrisoni (6703), Ashford, Kent, England Jan 3, 2006 Cask Handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Deep ruby colour with thin beige head. Good choc coffee with some black cherry fruit. Full and velvety in mouth. Excellent porter. Choc is a bit powdery but fruit balances and runs throughout asheft (1374), Marburg, Germany Jan 2, 2006 Opaque, dark reddish brown with a creamy, tan cover and lacing. Aroma = toasted coffee, burnt almond, nondescript fruit. Flavour = light toasted coffee malt with moderate to light malt bitterness and a nice vanilla finish. A bit subdued. Light body, medium carbonation and clean finish. ElBorracho (472), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 28, 2005 Cask at The Map Room. Pours dark with a bubbly, rocky head. Everything seemed subdued on this one. Hints of roasted grains and chocolate and not much else. Next. Holdwine (905), Beertimore, Maryland, USA Dec 26, 2005 Cask... wonderful rich porter. Lotsa chocolate notes. The tongue brings to mind chocolate covered fruit. Slightly dry finish.
