Aurelius (2643), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Apr 14, 2004 Updated: Jul 29, 2004Just a tad from opaque brown. Good bottle, fun, clean label. This was a very well-balanced brew. Tannic, ale-ish aroma. Some interesting notes of thyme or savory in the flavor profile. Tart, clear, very, very lightly sweet. Muted cocoa on the initial finish, which is generally quick. Just did this head to head with Entire Butt, and I've got to think that I prefer this as a better balanced session brew. wildchefbill (244), Sarasota, Florida, USA Apr 5, 2004 Pours very dark amber with a nice tan head. Extra appearance point for the lace that stays an inch above the beer level. Aroma is strong with standard porter coffee, chocolate and dried fig. Flavor is slightly sweet with heavy coffee and bitter chocolate, a little smokey. A bitter finish with a dry raw nut aftertaste. Excellent balance. Good flavors. A thick mouthfeel; wine-like without too much carbonation. A real nice porter. Hangover (764), Atlanta, USA Mar 27, 2004 Beer 100! Near-black pour with a somewhat rocky head. Excellent lacing. Aroma is standard coffee notes with toffee undertones. Flavor is of coffee, chocolate, cherry, some yeast. Sweet finish sticky and somehwhat bitter. One of those "unoffensive" brews. There are some really strong ports out there, and this one is not in the ballpark with the big guys. 5 for appearance though... excellent head retention and lace. Beautiful to behold, but falls a bit flat after that. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA Mar 19, 2004 color is deep brown, with a little red showing through. head is adequate beige. aroma is mostly roasted malts with mild hoppiness. flavor is very perfumey and roasted, with a moderate mouthfeel..fair amount of hops in the finish. very good. PhrankSlovacek (54), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Mar 9, 2004 Strange coffee, carmel smell. Somewhat bitter, chocolate flavor. Leaves a storng nut and coffee taste in in your mouth with a slightly dry finish. Pretty good beer, slight disappiontment compared to some other fine english porters. BBB63 (4198), La Porte, Indiana, USA Mar 2, 2004 Brown hue with ruby highlights producing a creamy tan head and very good lace. The aroma hints of ripe currents and apples, roasted dark malts, mocha and caramel, floral and grassy hops, and dusty yeast esters. The taste starts surprising bitter with the malts more in the background and adding support. A fruity twang and some woody characteristics midpoint. Has a slightly smoky and a touch coffee grind finish. This thin to medium-bodied brew has a lively mouthfeel and a dry backend, mildly astrengent. A dry porter which needs more mouthfeel, but successful in all other aspects. Worth a try. PushEject (42), Palmdale, California, USA Feb 23, 2004 It began with the most unbelievable fluffy head I've ever seen.
Seriously.
I can't say enough about the head on the this beer.
It started out huge then settled into an almost merinque-like cream.
Big, rich mouthfeel that smacked of chocolate and caramel and a final tartness that reminded me of Guiness or over-use of black patent malt.
This is my new all-time favorite porter.
The Poxy Boggards rock. Ernest (4481), Boulder, Colorado, USA Feb 22, 2004 Updated: Jul 24, 2004Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown, bottle conditioned. Aroma is moderately yeasty (dough, sweat), moderately malty (caramel, chocolate), lightly hoppy (flowers, apricot). Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Strong and unpleasant doughy raw yeast aroma kind of kills the nose...but then, there's not much going on there anyway, so no huge loss. Rather watery. Sourness makes this porter rather unpleasant.
