My favorite from Real Ale. Coffee, roasty, woody- I love the growing trend of barreling beer.

UPDATED: MAR 17, 2013 On tap at Petrol Station. Pours a black with large creamy beige head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is roast, coffee, raisin, and toffee. Medium mouthfeel with a strong bourbon that drowns out the coffee and oak with nice lingering dry finish.

Hmmmm....I donít know what I actually think about this one...pour is ruddy and slightly blackish brown with a thin sticky tan head....smell is very familiar....just like RA Coffee Porter....but with some smoke and coffee and faint hints of wood...taste...well thatís where it sort of goes sideways...hints of roasty sweet chocolate at the very front...then TONS and I mean TONS of wood and wine flavors come out...this is just so incredibly tannic...it tastes like there was about an ounce of wine in this glass when the beer was poured in....dry and fruity...I donít know how well the coffee mixes with it....it seems ALMOST sour, but not quite...wow...thatís as descriptive as I can really get.

Tap at Flying Saucer, Houston.
Pours a deep, mysterious onyx/amber with a nose of oaky-cigar-infused red wine and light coffee. Flavor is cigar red wine aged in a plastic cedar barrel. Oily mouthfeel. Very, VERY interesting.

On tap at the Gingerman in Plano. The smell is wood, touch of alcohol, malts, coffee for sure, and roast. The look is dark, black in color, and has a good beige colored head. The taste is malts, roasty, coffee, wood, and dry finish.

On tap at the Fort Worth Flying Saucer. Half a pint for ten bucks. A really nice beer, but not for that price. Pour is black with a small, creamy tan head. Aroma is woody alcohol, chocolate, a little coffee, and vanilla. Taste is a little boozy tartness, wood, and some coffee. The coffee isnít a prevailing flavor until the finish. I loved the original version for the boldness of the coffee. Now what made this beer a favorite of mine has taken a backseat to flavors that make it taste much like every other barrel, oak, whatever aged beer.

Tap...freaking $8.25 for a half pint! Tan head over a pitch black body. Great lace. Aroma of coffee, estery, very light oak, dark fruits, licorice. Flavor is tannic and very earthy. A bit woody. Lingering, lightly acidic coffee grounds. Dark fruit. Bitter baking chocolate. Possibly a touch sour. Prickly carbonation. Abrupt finish.

Tap at the Saucer FW. Not too crazy about the price but oh well. Black as night pour with a finger-sized khaki head. Aroma is immediately of heavy coffee and malt bitter. Also finds some sweet chocolate on the nose. Small bit of wood nose sets this apart from the regular, although it is still fairly cold right now. Aroma improves greatly as it warms. Big vanilla sweet alcohol notes and heavy wood. Almost like a French pressed coffee. Heavy mouthfeel. Large taste. Big flavors of wood and vanilla bourbon. Lots of coffee comes through also. Fairly dry, bitter finish that retains some of the chocolate present earlier. Much more bitter coffee comes through after it warms. Quite good!
