IN THE LOCAL VERNACULAR OF DUSSELDORF, sticke means “secret,” a nod to the experimental recipes employed by the brewers of this obscure variation on the Altbier. While the recipe for our Sticke Alt is also a secret, we can tell you that it honors the spirit of this special German style ale with its elevated noble hop profile, more pronounced bitterness, and firm malt character. 15°

Decent. But not really. Strong, astringent bitterness that almost totally overwhelms a very mild caramel malt. Would make a nice IPA?

Sampled at GABF 2013. Pours a clear amber with some frothy, white head. Light banana in the nose, malt, clove, some brown bread. Flavor has some candy, clove, bubblegum, brown malt, orange. Clean finish. Not completely true to style. Very estery.

12 ounce bottle thanks to Errl. Pours a darker amber with a wispy head of beige foam. Not much retention or lacing. The aroma presents caramel, vanilla, dark fruits, and a touch of grass. Tastes earthy and sweet up front, but moves to a drying, nutty bitterness in the finish. Decent mouthfeel with just a lightly tingling of carbonation felt on the back of the tongue.
