IN THE LOCAL VERNACULAR OF DUSSELDORF, sticke means “secret,” a nod to the experimental recipes employed by the brewers of this obscure variation on the Altbier. While the recipe for our Sticke Alt is also a secret, we can tell you that it honors the spirit of this special German style ale with its elevated noble hop profile, more pronounced bitterness, and firm malt character. 15°

Dark amber pour with a thin tan head. Aroma is caramel, grain, earthy. Slightly bitter. Very nice grassiness/earthiness flavor, Long lightly bitter finish. Definitely my favorite altbier, and a go-to as long as they have it on the shelves.

Pours a dark brown from bottle into stemware with a long lasting but not huge off white head. Aroma is very German like malts. Not super sweet. Taste is malty with some nice hops at the end. Not super sweet, a little tangy. Hops feel a little bitter, also earthy. Nice and thick mouth and nice carb.

Growler. Pours a dark reddish-brown with a shallow, fine-grained, off-white head. Nose is roasted nuts, tea, dark fruit, and light smoke. Smoky and dry on the front of the palate, with tea and nutty notes; similar to a brown ale, but there’s a definite hoppy austerity that keeps it distinct and drier. Finish is long, clean, and smoky. Really nice.

Pours a reddish brown color with a small bubbly head. Notes of burnt cookies, dirt, brown sugar, and green hops.

Decent. But not really. Strong, astringent bitterness that almost totally overwhelms a very mild caramel malt. Would make a nice IPA?

Sampled at GABF 2013. Pours a clear amber with some frothy, white head. Light banana in the nose, malt, clove, some brown bread. Flavor has some candy, clove, bubblegum, brown malt, orange. Clean finish. Not completely true to style. Very estery.

Pours dark amber with a thin tan head. Aroma of caramel with some grain and dark fruit. Taste much the same, though a bit less sweet and more bitter than might be expected.
