BeerBelcher (698), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 1, 2008 I was pleasantly surprised by this beer - it is a bit nutty and offered lots of nice caramel-ness while still being quite drinkable on a humid spring evening in Houston.
Color was a clean-looking but not exactly clear brown color, with a short-lived fizzy head that I’ve seen on other beers from this brewery. Aroma was surprisingly pronounced and malty. Flavor was caramel, a bit of nuttiness, and some chocolate. Mouthfeel was a bit on the thin side, but quite refreshing.
Not bad - I wouldn’t swim oceans or cross deserts to get it, but I thought it to be pretty good.
I had this on-tap at the Houston Flying Saucer Draught Emporium.
xibalba89 (81), New York, New York, USA Jul 20, 2008 Pours a light brown with a light head. Flavor is pretty boring, just some light bitter hops and the brown malts. Not bad, but not remarkable, either. AndrewKScott (246), Lemont, Illinois, USA Jul 15, 2008 Pretty good ale. Has a spicy aroma, and a roasty, malty taste. Finish is very dry. Pretty good for a brown ale. If I ever get a chance to pick this up again, I probably would. yespr (5611), Copenhagen O, Denmark Jul 6, 2008 12 fl oz bottle. Pours hazy dark brown with an amber/orange glare and with a slowly collapsing tan head. Mild acidic, spiced and hardroasted malt aroma. Spiced and hard roasted malt flavour. Holds a mild bitterness following this. Ends acidic and with a lingering roasted malt flavour accompanied with a mild chocolate smoothness. aplusbreaks (24), , Colorado, USA Jul 3, 2008 thanks mar for the bottle. Pours a deep dark mahogany/brown with a small off white to tan head. Aromas of cola and maple, along with the expected malts. Flavor is very much the same with some good hops in this, A very well balanced brown ale. kmweaver (1813), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Jul 3, 2008 12oz bottle, courtesy of lb4lb. Thanks, Deniz! Pours a dark cola color; light-tan head with glistening, fine-bubbled lacing; a really nice pour. Lots of cola, maple syrup, and brown sugar in the aroma, surrounded by a light mineral bitterness and some coffee notes throughout. Medium mouthfeel: mouthwatering acidity upfront, with coffee, caramel, and maple syrup maltiness at the core; some hoppiness is certainly present (minerals, citrus) but nothing as forward or defined as in something like Surly Bender; still, very well balanced, crisp and dry despite the solid maltiness at the core; breadiness and some coffee and brown sugar become more apparent mid-palate. Very nicely done, sessionable brown. Medium finish: bready notes, biscuity / toasty malts, and some dry coffee.
