For some time now, our brewers have been working on a series of experimental beers that fall under the umbrella known as “Mysterium Verum” (translation: “Real Mystery”). A Mysterium Verum beer can be as simple as aging one of our seasonals in an oak barrel, or, it could be an entirely new creation that has fermented and aged in wood, stainless steel, or a combination of the two. The one common thread in all of the Mysterium Verum beers will be their experimental nature, but from this common thread we expect the beers to range far and wide. Vol.XIV - the barrel-aged release of our 14th Anniversary Ale. It was aged for 6 months in American oak.

Tap at BTBF. Poured a hazy golden orange with an off white head. Aroma had a strong fruitiness to it with some wood, bread, and yeast. Taste was peach, yeast, and wood.

Hazy tan/black. Thin head. This has a malty, slightly bready tripely aroma. The brett is only starting to have an influence, lending a hint of wildness to the firm, slightly bready triple. The finish has again a touch of brett. Needs a few more months of brett conditioning to get serious.

Draft @ Hoppy Monk, El Paso.In a small goblet. Is gold with scattered lace. A bone dry aroma has certain Brett and it mellows the white peach sweet aroma. Enticing, but the big Brett in the aromas don’t carry through to palate which is sweet and yeasty. Too much yeast on tongue. Peaches white plum and a little Brett in finish. A for effort.

Rich, dark, fruity alcohol nose. Dark, plum-brownish color. Smaller white head in the snifter. Agressive flavor of white oak, white grape wine, and some beer somewhere in there. The oak is really strong in this one. Contradicting palate... Light fadez to heavy. Beer/wine. Its probably so good you don’t even know it.

On tap at Poison Girl. Pours a cloudy orange with a small frothy white head that diminishes quickly to nothing. The aroma is a fruity oak with apple and citrus. Medium mouthfeel with a citrus hops and oak with a nice dry finish. Hides the alcohol very well making it very easy to drink, a very good Belgian strong ale from Real Ale.
