COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our winter seasonal Phoenixx rises from the great ale recipes of the UK, but we’ve brewed it with a distinctly American attitude. Deep amber in color, Phoenixx delivers subtle notes of toffee and caramel, characteristic of traditional English Crystal malt. Yet with this ale, it’s all about the hops. Made from a blend of hops from across the pond, highlighted by the Phoenix hop variety from Kent, this special brew’s signature is its complex and strong hop character. This winter, warm up with a pint or two of a British-inspired beer that’s been reborn a Texan. 15.5°

UPDATED: JAN 17, 2006 Draught. Very nice almandine body with a half inch dense/foamy head. Nose-very clean sanitized smell backed up with some aroma hops. Taste-medium bitter in the middle, medium alcohol, papery, a very odd flavor that I can’t quite put my finger on that I can only dexibe as lightly charred wood and paper. Reminds me of burnt grapefruit. A def. burnt fruit taste. Perfect bitterness, good malts an sweetness, but damn-that odd taste reminds me of staleness. Good lacing.

Muddy, reddish brown with a fat fine bubbled head. Hoppy cake like aroma with a hint of cheese. Sweet, cookie and malt flavor with some musty hops. Well balanced but the stale hop flavors detract.

12oz bottle from Whole Foods. Dark amber body with a slight tan head (that recedes fairly quickly). Malty, toffee aromas combined with bready goodness. Tastes of toffee, caramel, roasted malts and raisin. Thin to medium mouthfeel with a slight to moderate bitter finish. Not as smooth as I would have hoped.

Dark amber. Good head. Good lacing. Straw aroma. Taste of caramel, malt, and hops and then a bitter hoppy finish.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2011 Bottle from Thirdeye11. Deep red pour with a nice head. Aroma is bread, hops, toffee, and oats. Flavor is honey, toffee, spinach?, malts, and raisins. EDIT: I would leave the same score, but note a definite earthy hop and a little spiciness.

Copper pour with white head and good lacing. Aroma is mostly caramel malt. Flavor is very malty but with a strong bitter hop finish. Pretty good but didn’t jump out at me.

Thanks to AttitudeBrew for this one in trade. Pours a hazy brown-amber color with an off-white head. Nose is nice caramel, toffee, cocoa, some biscuit, and a bit of earth. Flavor starts with caramel, then goes to grassy hops, then some ash, then lingering miscellaneous bitterness. Medium to full-bodied for an ESB (even a double ESB). Interesting take on the style; nice and somewhat complex.

Pours a cloudy copper with two finger head that disappears quickly. Funky aroma with bread and grass. Taste the malts, with some spice and hop bitterness. Enjoyable, thanks to Amnesia87 for sending this my way.
