Really rich spicy malt aroma. Pours a cloudy brown with some lingering white head. Taste is really big, malty. A little spicy. Has a smoky finish? Some alcohol flavor.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
malty, earthy, burned sugar sweet aroma. Pours a murky dark copperish - actually looks kind of thin. Earthy. Sugary. Toffee. Dark fruit. Very light hops on the finish followed by a little bit of booziness. This is pretty good. Nice job, Real Ale. I had low expectations but I’m very pleased with this and will be getting more.

Cask pour into a snifter at the Hay Market in Houston, Texas. Dark ruby port color. No head after 5 minutes. Peat note offsets almost dark rum like sweetness. Lovely.

I tried this one back in 2009 and liked that version much better than this one.
Aromas and flavors were malt heavy with a peat/ medicinal quailty i didnt remember. The ABV dropped from 9.7% to 9.3% but the alcohol is much more noticeable in the finish. I dont really care for this newer version as much as the older one.

Not clear enough as a heavy ale on the palate. Scotch ale should have a more pronounced flavor and not be as sweet. Enjoyable and worth trying as an interest if you're into beer, but that's it.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours a hazy red-brown with a fine-grained, creamy, sticky, lacy off-white head. Nose is port wine, bourbon, tomato leaf, smoked meat, roast nuts, and vanilla. Sweet and boozy up front, with a definite smoky note; I might almost think this was a rauchbier if I hadn’t seen the label. On the back of the tongue, it dries out a bit, moving more into dried fruit, roasted nuts, and a mushroom/earthy element. Finish is long, herbal, and less sweet. It’s good, but the smoke is very dominant; if you like that, then this is for you.

On tap to the Hay Merchant. Poured into a tulip. Nice dark goldish brown appearance with a terrific 2 inch white head. Aromas of caramel and slight booze. Taste of sweet malts hits you first then deeper malt with a slight boozy sweet finish. Solid rendition of a wee heavy going to cop a 6’er when I can find it.
