Mysterium Verum. Scots Gone Wild marks the initial offering from Real Ale Brewing Company in the world of sour beers. Real Heavy, our strong scotch ale, was aged for 6 months in American oak barrels, during which time it underwent a dramatic refermentation due to the presence of a very special cocktail of wild yeast and bacteria. The end result is a dry, cherry-pie sour, with a subtle oak character and a bold tartness. OG: 20˚P

On tap at RealTail 2012. Pours a cloudy brown with a small frothy off white head that quickly diminishes to nothing. The aroma is oak, cherry, funk, and peat. Thin mouthfeel with a light tartness, vinegar, oak and nice sour finish. Wow really enjoyed this one. A very impressive sour from Real Ale.

On tap. Brownish amber brew with a bit of off-white head. Nose is complex and all over the place - cherries, oak, vinous, light smoke. Big cherry pie filling flavor - smooth and wonderfully tart.

Pours dark amber. Very sweet with dark fruit notes, balanced out by a slight tartness. Very slight funk. Very drinkable.

Sample at GABF 10/11/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. Brownish-amber color with a medium off-white head and spotty lacing. Aroma of malt and dark fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of earthy malt, cherries and yeast. The finish is peat malt up front with a tart cherry aftertaste. Above average overall.

Sampled at GABF. Nose is nice with the taste of wild. Cherry and caramel throughout. Different for a sour but well done.

On tap at Whole Foods Lakewood. The beer pours a brown color with a large tan head. The aroma is full of big cherries, as well as some toffee and vinegar notes. The flavor is along the same line. I get some cherries and other dark fruit, as well as some leather, oak and toffee. As the beer warms I get some vanilla and maple notes, as well as some cocoa. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. The cherries really stand out and make this a delicious sour.

Pours an average cheddar orange with a nose of wild cherry and horse blanket. Flavor is berry brett horse saddle. Tingly on the tongue. Not bad at all.

Yep. They’ve gone wild. I had no idea this would be so sour. Not too sour, of course, but wow. It has the meatiness of a Scotch ale, but also has the fermented, wild characteristic of a wild/sour ale that actually softens it up really well. This beer wasn’t carbonated very heavily, at least in my glass, but had it been it would probably put me off. I can’t remember the details of its aroma or flavor’s characteristics, but overall it was a sweet, slightly sour and dense beer. The sweetness and sourness are well-balanced, but bold bold enough, that it’s a strong-palated beer while still being very enjoyable. But wow, what a powerful flavor!

Tap at Hoppy Monk in El Paso, TX September 2012-Pours deep brown red hue with a small lite tan head. Nose is amazing -out of this world! WOW, cherries, funk, oak, vanilla, sweet peat malt-wow! Holy shit! vanilla oak cherries tart notes on the flavors. Damn im writing all scrambled here! Amazing lovely oaky vanilla finish with lingering tart/funk. Amazing Sour here and im glad its from TX! :) For sour heads out there, seek this one out!

Hazy amber, cream head. Nose is sour, cherry, tart, wood, bugs, and dirty. Great on the palate, heavy sourness, followed by tartness, wood, cherry, mouth puckering finish.
