Barleywine fragrance with a hint of hops and wort. 2007 vintage. Sweet carmel flavor. A nice hint of bitterness. I’m no fan of barleywines but this is drinkable.

Bottle: 2011 vintage. Super murky, swampy toasted golden-brown body. Opaque. No real just, just a timid beige collar. Strong, boozy Granny Smith apples on the nose, backed with caramel drizzled plums, burnt brown sugar, & a rush of toasted chestnuts. The booze on the palate comes off as rum-like. Not sure why, but it does. Semi-tart plums, grapes, rum, sticky toffee, brown sugar, molasses syrup, & again, a nice bit of roasted nuttiness that lingers in the finish. No real hop character left, unsurprisingly. Thick, creamy body, minimal carbonation. Not bad.

From notes. Tasted on 10/21/12 from a capped 12oz bottle. Pours clear copper with a thin, bubbly beige head that dissipates quickly. The nose is sweet caramel and toffee with a hint of bitter aged hops underlying. The flavor is a bit more bready and bitter, with more burnt toffee than the nose. The body is medium with light carbonation and a long caramel and bitter hops finish.

Orange rusty amber with a decent almond meat head. Simmers down to just a cap, laces decently.
Smell is sweet initially, caramel and figs, toffee and a touch of green tobacco.
Flavour follows suit. More of the tobacco leaves here. Sweet still. Honey and some mild dark fruits. A touch of hops still left, but not overly so.
Mild carbonation, medium body. Sweet, but pretty drinkable. Wait, wat? 11.5%? Well that was masked well.
I love barleywines. This is a solid one, but not particularly spectacular.

On tap, poured into a snifter. A notable aroma of syrupy caramel and chocolate start first on the nose followed by milder notes of sugar, oak, alcohol, and even more subtler notes of nuts, citrus, and melon with hints of cream and rye bread late. It pours an opaque, murky amber brown color with a gelatin soft, off-white / yellow head. A medium thick, soft ring is retained with a light surface dusting. It starts by leaving a thick, sheet coating of lace, but tapers off by mid drink to leaving a thin dusting along the glass. The taste is a medium bitterness with a medium-high malty sweet tone. The chewy, sticky beer has a full body and creamy carbonation. Flavors of chocolate and caramel are most prevalent with a malty and grassy, alcohol warm finish. More caramel comes through as the drink warms up. The aftertaste is citrus peel, rye, and a strong woody character.

Hazy amber with thin white head. Malty aroma with some sweetness. Smooth flavor with a little citrus. Good one to look for each year.

12oz green label bottle served in a snifter.
A - Pours a bright reddish orange color with a few floaties. Small head vanishes but allows for a solid collar and a thin island of micro bubbles.
S - Candy caramel, old white bread, toffee, muted citrus hops, minor hints of oxidation(nothing bad) toast comes out as it warms, very nutty, toasted walnuts, woody strawberries, dry herbs, caramel cotton candy.
T - Dense nutty caramel, creamy toffee, fruity butterscotch, passion fruit. Very sweet but the has a toasted pecan like bitterness and notes of wood in the middle, counteracting the sweetness. Roasted barley comes in strong toward the end with some resinous hops, finishing dry.
M - Full bodied, thick and viscous, low carbonation kicks up quite creamy when you hold it in the mouth.
I haven’t had a fresh one but this is an incredible beer with 4 years on it. Only slight oxidation that hardly detracts from the synergy of all the other components. Awesome mouthfeel that demands sipping. This is drinking fantastic right now and seems like it could handle a couple more years of aging.

A: Pours a copper ale with excellent clarity. Medium sheet off-white head with rope lacing. Above avg.
S: Caramel, alcohol, sweet, sharp and little hops. What hops hang out are resiny and pine forward. Fairly simple. A slight hint of green apple skin.
T: Alcohol is a bit strong in this one. The beer is still hot, but has the beginnings of a sweetness and maltiness I enjoy in a well aged BW. The toffee is hiding in there somewhere. There’s the slightest hint of vanilla at the back.
M: Medium body with Low carbonation. Middle of the road.
O: Decent BW, could use a little higher SRM to add to some of the malt potential on this beer. Okay. Not the best.

Bottle dated 3.23.12 thanks to errl poured into a brandy snifter. Pours a lighter copper with just a whisp of a white head of foam. The aroma is buttery, grainy, caramel, and cereal. The taste lends a heavy sweetness that reminds me of a biscuit and honey. A bit of alcohol burn warms the throat and stomach as it works it’s way down. Low carbonation. Heavy body that weighs the palate down.
