Commercial Description:
Measuring between 10 and 11% ABV, depending on the year, this barleywine was Real Ale's first seasonal product. It is uncharacteristically smooth for this style of beer, as it is created with five different kinds of hops. It also displays a rich malt character, and the healthy portion of hops gives it a distinctive dry and balanced finish. Sisyphus Barleywine Style Ale, weighing in around 480 calories per 12 ounce serving, is not for the faint of heart. Makes a great nightcap!

Thanks lb4lb. Brick red pour, medium almond head. Aroma is citrus, pears, brandy, almost lambicy. Flavor is a dry fruitiness of cherries, citrus, dark berries and then a big caramel finish. Low hop bitterness which I like, but pine and grapefruit play a good role. Mostly just a dry fruitiness and a caramel finish. Thick mouthfeel and a smooth finish make for a pretty good barleywine.

This one poured a copper color with a small white head. The aroma contains some alcohol, toffee, caramel, and cherries. The flavor is slightly sweet and contains some dark fruit, cherries, and a hint of citrus. The aftertaste is quite warming. Overall a nice barleywine.

I don’t know if this was a bad bottle, but I’m afraid I won’t go to the trouble to get another to find out. Attractive, mahogany brown pour with halo of an off white head. The nose and flavor have some interesting complexities, but the most dominant by far in the flavor is burnt tire. Something has gone horribly wrong here.

Clear amber colour, off-white head. Some barn-yard and earthy aromas. Flavours of medicine, yeast and caramel malts. Heavy beer, but alcohol well hidden. Very special.

Bottled, 2007. Thx to flippy. Aroma is hoppy with some yeast and oak. Sourish touch. Hazy, orange coloured with an off-white head. Taste is bitter dry with a sourish accent. makes it interesting. Hops present, some medicin. Actually quite good and straight forward. Has even more potential. Probably it will gain some more pleasant complexness with aging. (Noize, keep those bottles well conditioned! ;)

Clear amber with no head. Sudued candi sugar malted milk aroma. Medium body with light carbonation. Decent pit fruit malt bomb flavors here, with a nice boozy bite to finish. 2007 bottling.
