Commercial Description:
Don't be fooled by the label depicting a Grim Reaper Santa Claus in a sleigh pulled by skeletal reindeer - this is not a Christmas Ale. "Sleighor" is an Imperial India Pale Ale. The intense hop bitterness, flavor and aroma will dominate at first. To complement, the body has a complex blend of malt and alcohol flavors. The ABV is 9.1%, and the IBU's are pushing the mid 80s. The entire family of Cascade hops is used. Cascade, Centennial and Columbus are spread throughout the boil, and a huge sack of Amarillo for dry hopping. The hop combination gives this brew a distinct profile true to its IPA roots. The presentation is clear copper with a thick tan head, coupled with billowing citrus and floral hop aroma. "Do You Dare" to enjoy this fine ale from the Reaper? Brewed at Sudwerk for ReaperAle.

From a 220z. bottle--Poured a deep amber-copper body with a nice fluffy white head. Big piny, resinous hops aroma. Well balanced with big gritty malts. Citrusy and floral. Big on the grapefruit character. I like this style of beer, and I loved this one! Where can I get more?

Bottle.Tasty treat shared with alo and RLB. Aroma was a strong piney hop blend. Poured amber light head. Flavor was all hip hop-ity, as I remarked, who put the pine tree in this? Palate was medium and finish was long. Overall, very tasty.

Toast to Bill Daraghy who should have been with us for this one. Pours clear and amber with minimal head. Powerful aroma of hops and pine. One need only get to the nose to realize this a serious IPA. Taste matches the powerful aroma. Some citrus to balance the hops, but hops are HUGE with this beer.

Bottle courtesy of SS: Poured a deep clear orangey color ale with a nice foamy head with some good retention and very good lacing. Aroma of bitter and citrus notes with low caramel malt notes. Taste is also dominated by some fresh bitter hops with some nice citrus notes with a nice malt profile with some sweet notes. Body is quite full with some great carbonation and no alcohol notes are detectable. Very well done.

$5.99 bomber from the 45F refrigerator in local liquor store. Was really surprized to see this. Last brewed in November 2006, according to Chuck, the brewer at Green Flash. Deep amber color. Small to micro bubble head surrounds the surface of liquid. Hops aroma pops out at me, when I first poured it into my glass, but then fades to a very nice amount of oxidation and malty goodness I love with aged IIPAs. Lovely. A real pleasure to smell. Taste has a higher bitterness, but the grapefruit aspect has disappearance, and been replaced with a little oxidation. Very drinkable. Would like to do a side-by-side with Double Bastard, but I’m guessing Double Bastard would win by 0.1-0.2 points. I’m going to buy another of these delicious soon-to-be-retired bottles.

10/23/2007: ReaperAle Sleighor Double IPA India Pale Ale has a deep honey orange color with a thick, lasting ivory head. The aroma exudes grapefruit and pine hops along with a heavy sweet, sugary caramel malt. The flavor imitates the aroma along with a high dose of bitterness. This beer has a medium-full body that is extremely smooth and just a slight bit creamy on the palate. The alcohol is nicely tucked away beneath the ample maltiness and bitterness of the flavor. The sticky floral pine bitterness seems to grow and grow with each taste. After awhile it almost become overwhelming, but luckily there is enough sweetness provided by the large toffee/caramel malt base. The alcohol gets a little more pronounced as the beer warms which also seems to exacerbate the intensity of the bitterness. To sum it all up, this Double IPA is still going strong and really does drink like a hop bomb. The important thing though is that there are enough other flavors and some sweetness to help diffuse the intense bitter qualities nearly to the point that this beer is actually fairly enjoyable.

22 fl. oz/ bottle (9.1% Alc. Vol.) from adrian910ss (Nov 2006). Thank you very much! Rating #195 for this beer...

22oz bomber. Not to impressed with this double IPA felt there was too much malt charecter and lacked in the hop department not only in aroma but in taste as well. Dissappointed.

Bomber. Poured translucent medium orange with a tall, well-retained cap of beige head and sticky lacing. The aroma picked up hefty doses of pine and grapefruit hoppage along with some dried grasses.. very sweet caramel and alcohol notes beneath. The flavor had a drier sweet caramel and candy surrounded by dried pine needle, grapefruit, and signature Amarillo bitterness. Rather rough transitions on the palate with a grainy feel.. medium-bodied.. very sweet, bitter, and boozy finish. Solid overall.
