illinismitty (1790), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Jun 15, 2006 Updated: Jul 17, 2006Bomber. Pours a hazy amber with a frothy off-white head. Strong malty, citrus, and piney hop aroma. My first sip made me wince. Huge malty backbone (like a barleywine), with bitter juicy hops taking center stage. I pick up very faint smoky flavor, maybe just the hops messing with my senses. Boy what a rich, bitter, resiny finish, along with some sweet citrusy notes. This is a true hop bomb.Very one dimensional, but sometimes you just gotta have your hops. This may be my first IIPA that I could say that the hops could be toned down and still be a beast. The bitterness is almost obnoxious, and I love IIPA’s. This should really be in 12oz bottles, as this is a sipper...and a palate killer. Whew!!! Time for bed JasonG (700), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Jun 1, 2006 22oz bomber: rather cloudy dark amber color with big off white head. Aroma has lots of toasted caramel, hints of apricot, peach, hazelnuts, cottoncandy, sherry. Flavor is malty, fair amount of caramel, bit of oak, subdued hoppiness. Finish is mildly bitter, faint metallic notes. Another one that straddles the line between dIPA and barleywine, but doesn’t quite do either justice. ChazMania (408), Pasadena, California, USA May 19, 2006 Updated: Aug 19, 200822oz Bomber. Holy shnickes! This stuff was inredible! Had it at Stuffed Sandwhich here in So Cal. Thick creamy head, and flavor for days. Nice chewy and rich hop flavor, with a long lasting warmth to the insides. Definetley one of my favorites. Gotta find more.
rerated- from 4.2 down to 3.5. The rerelease of this beer is nowhere near as good as the original. It now tastes like metal and tin. bindpmc (88), San Diego, California, USA Apr 26, 2006 Poured a fluffy beige head with lots of lacing on the glass. Copper/cherry color. Lots of hops in the nose and a nice combo of hops a malts in the flavor. Not as hop-centric as other SoCal double IPAs, but a pleasant middle ground found between hops and malt. Frighteningly smooth and drinkable for such a potent beer. timmy300 (199), bloomington, Illinois, USA Apr 18, 2006 hops = lots.......alcohol = lots.........yes this is a double ipa.......... bogdi1 (32), Helsinki, Finland Apr 17, 2006 22 oz., from Darkelf – Thanks Stephen! Head is big and thick leaving a beautiful lacing. You’re getting the hops in the nose as well of course but there’s much more to it: spices like cinnamon and vanilla plus some sweetish dark fruits are what I can detect. Overall aroma is sweeter and more complex than expected. Flavor is fruity amd malty with a bitter finish. Medium to full bodied with a nice creamy texture. A nice surprise with an original character. Not your typical DIPA, that’s for sure. adrian910ss (1395), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 13, 2006 22 oz bomber. Pours a cloudy orange amber color with a thick white creamy head. Aroma is slightly piney, not as piney as a lot of west coast IPA’s, with plenty of hops present. Taste is citrusy with a slight pine aftertaste. A slight spicy burning feeling as it goes down. Hard to tell that this is a double IPA. Nevertheless, very good overall. Naven (864), Poway, California, USA Apr 4, 2006 From a 22 oz bomber.
Very nice, bronze/amber color. Nice lacing, strong initial hop taste. Goes down very nice, with a lingering hop/alcohol taste. Very good IIPA
