The aroma is pretty hoppy with notes of pine, a certain herbal quality and of course citrus (most notably grapefruit). The beer has lightly sweet malty notes of caramel up front, but then quickly moves to a solid astringent/ herbal bitterness that lingers in the finish. This beer is fairly light on the body, and could perhaps use a bit more malt to balance the ample hop rates. That bitterness really lingers on the tongue, interesting. This beer is a lot more aggressive, and tastier, than I was expecting from my limited sampling of this breweries wares. It seems a bit out of balance though, even for a double IPA, and I would like to see more of an emphasis on fresh flavor and aromatic hoppy notes as opposed to the bitterness. There is some hop flavor here though, there are notes of bitter herbs, lots of pine and a hint of citrus. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA

Decent head fades to a ring of film. Huge sweet caramel malt aroma. Plenty of bitter hops, just not alot of character, sort of flat bitterness. Flavor much the same, malt bill is there, lots of caramel and cereal grains, flat bitterness. Residuel earthy bitterness in the finish. Medium carbonation, creamy mouthfeel. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jun 13, 2005 Cloudy rusty amber color with a medium white head. Oily, orange rind aroma with spicey spruce. Strong effervescent stemmy citrus hops in the flavor along with a touch of alcohol. An enjoyable but run-of-the-mill IIPA. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 13, 2005 Unfiltered, lovely bronze / orange. Some splotches for a head and nice lacing. Great aroma of honey, lavender, lemon grass and warm orange juice. True to style. Maple and hops predominate the flavors. A little bit of sugar sprinkled grapefruit to give it the I2PA edge. Some malt sweetening for balance. Reminds me of Ruinition with more of a malt backbone. Fine, solid rendition of the style. Thanks to 1FastSTi for sharing. hezron (601), Viroqua, Wisconsin, USA

Yellow-orange color with a thin, white head. Aswesome hoppy bitterness, this is the first Californian double IPA I have tried. It is pretty good. MIBRomeo (1965), Wisconsin, USA

Smells good big citrus hop aroma and a nice carmel malt undertone w/ oranges. Palate is thick creamy sticky good. Flavor is a big crisp citrus hop w/ a nice carmel malt backbone. Reminded me of ruinationw/ more malt. Very good stuff. Thanks to blake for sharing. 1FastSTi (2557), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 11, 2005 The aroma is very hoppy. Lots of citrus, pine, and amarillo hops, cascade, centennial, I get it all. I also get a decent amount of malt in it. It pours to a reddish brown hazy body with an off white head that has decent lacing. 80 IBU? Seems more like well over 100 IBU. Kinda like Stone Ruination and more malts. I also get some tannins. The palate is very hot from the dry hopping. I’d like to try this beer after sitting for more months. I wonder how the palate would be. jtw (942), farmington, Michigan, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 1, 2005 bottle thanks to darkElf. deep amber with lots of foamy stuff sticking to the glass. nice aroma of citrus (grapefruit) and resin (pine) that seems quite mild, compared to some over-the-top IIPAs. good amount of malt, mostly caramel, balancing a good amount of hops. this is by no means an extreme beer, but it’s how i prefer an IIPA to be: leaning toward balance instead of raw hoppiness. very good!
