Snojerk321 (1674), San Diego, California, USA Oct 1, 2006 22oz bottle from Bev Mo La Mesa. I love the labeling on this bottle.....classic! Pours a medium copper color with a nice off white head that left a lot of lacing on the glass. Aroma mostly of fresh hops with some citrus and a bit of sweet caramel malts. It basicaly smells like a pine tree that grows fruit (if that was possible). I look forward to this brew every year. I need to buy some and hide them from my roomate.
arondee (138), Tucson, Arizona, USA Jul 1, 2009 Pours a dark brown color with a nice off white head. small amount of lacing, not much carbonation. Aroma is full of hops and malt. The taste is very unique for a double IPA, this isn’t the citrusy super hoppy beer I was expecting. Instead there’s a good amount of hops balanced by malts with a medium mouthfeel. Alcohol is hidden very well. It’s more heavy on the malt and caramel flavors than I was expecting. Really well made and well balanced. Cornfield (4758), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Jun 1, 2009 Bomber from the Binny’s in Orland Park, IL: This poured a deep copper body with a tall manilla head - no lace. The aroma was rich with sweet caramel, countered by a sturdy yellow grapefruit, earth, zest, and light pine hop scents. It’s a big beer, and surprizingly well balanced for a DIPA, the hoppy bitterness rearing its head near the end and lasting through the prolonged dry, bitter, peppery finish. The alcohol remained hidden the whole time and I would have thought this was a straight IPA had I not known better. Quality stuff. Metalhead (566), Lake Zurich, Illinois, USA May 18, 2009 Pours a hazy bronze with a decent head.
Aroma is a mild hop/malt combo.
So far ok,
Taste starts like a typical IIPA then quickly changes to a WTF is this earthy chewing on weed stems finish. Got a little better as it warmed. The malt came out but ZERO pine ZERO citrus BBQ chips saved it from being drain pour. $6 a bomber. Save yer $. harbuck76 (102), El Cajon, California, USA May 12, 2009 22 oz. Pours a dark amber with nice white head. Aroma is very earthy, mild citrus. caremal malts. I was expecting a big citrus , pine hop aroma. This was a big let down in aroma and taste. It does finish dry and bitter with a HonkeyBra (1024), Lemont, Illinois, USA May 8, 2009 Deep, hazy amber pour with thick off-white head. Light, spicey hops in the aroma, some caramel malt. Flavor starts nice and hoppy, then finishes with a wierd beef jerky note. Kind of an infected, home brewish note. Maybe smoke? Whatever, it’s strange yemenmocha (187), Glendale, Arizona, USA Apr 25, 2009 Pours a translucent golden amber with contrasting white head. Head dissipates quickly.
Nose is decidedly grapefruit & See’s candies.
Palate is a good balance of both big malt and big hop. Prickly sweetness on the finish, reminds me of cinnamon and brown sugar. Overall it has a candied quality also, like many good IPA’s. can8ianben (818), Pasadena, California, USA Apr 23, 2009 Sweet malt in the aroma and body with a strong bitter finish, but none of the pine or citrus I hope for in a Double. More hops and less malt please. It has a peculiar smoke flavor that is unsettling. Kind of dirty... maybe a bad keg? Sampled at Naja’s IPA fest. Oscbert (467), Sacramento, California, USA Apr 13, 2009 ~Cloudy orange amber with quickly diminishing white head.
~Citrus grapefruit scent with hefty amount of malts. Smells almost like lipton ice tea in a good way.
~Starts super sweet and quickly turns bitter. The transition from sweet to bitter is really enjoyable.
~Medium feel. Lasting bitter finish.
~Good DIPA!
