A reddish, full bodied premium ale, with a rich malty flavour & a lasting, hoppy & bittersweet finish.

Fat, oily and malty. Fruity and sweet from the malt with no head on a deep mahogany pour. A little bit of citrus and exotic fruit in the hops. Very drinkable.

The big brother to IPA and Smuggler, this is a typically malty ale. Neither aroma nor finish are particularly pronounced but has a nice mouthfeel which makes it very drinkable. Wouldn’t describe it as an ESB though, more an old fashioned special bitter. One for the malt fans, best avoided by the Hop Nazis.

Really lovely, full beer, balanced and without either being a bitter or a stout or mild, it slips nicely into its own groove! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cask at the Kings Head W2. Ruddy red in colour, thin head. Tasty malty backbone, fresh fruity hop flavours with moderate bitter finish. Pretty decent.

Pint at a wetherspoons. Very dark red with an initial creamy head, but it doesn’t linger. Smooth malty beer with hops and a nice bitter light crystal malt finish. Pleasant lightly hopped aroma. Perfectly drinkable. Fruity notes.

Half, gravity dispense at Bree Louise. Crystal clear, mahogany coloured body. Bright naked surface. Roasted dark malts to the nose. Taste of dark caramel and bead, mid-sweet, sustained by dark fruits beneath. Bittering malts to the finish. Well made (London, 25.11.2012).

First tasted this at the Hogshead, Paisley in October 1999. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear pale garnet in colour with a tart berry fruit note in the short aroma. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malt gives a fiery digestive biscuit base with tart redcurrant fruit evident. Strong metallic tang of hop resins give a dry dusty note to the sharp aftertaste. Finish is slightly astringent with dry oak cask and orange peel present. An ok ESB.
