cask in nottingham. porter and stout festival. This was the first of the night, was a bit bland, it seemed a bit out of place at the festival.

at the tap in the village with ethereal. i think it smells of pencil sharpenings(if that is a word) or more formally graphite, and hops (it is a beer after all!). dark cherry wood colour. And hey, i would never have guessed, it tastes of roasted nuts, still a bit metallic but not so much pencil any more. Strage pint it is but not bad.

Cask at the Brewery Tap, Wimbledon Village, 4th March 2008. Rich chestnut brown colour with a strange aroma of hops and graphite (like pencil sharpenings). Hops and malt are well balanced but there’s a metallic note. Light at the front of the mouth and then gets fuller. Ok, but didn’t wow me.

Cask@Sussex BF. Tastes quite nutty and caramelly. It is quite malty, and initally sweet, but quickly dries in the end, with a nutty dryness. Crystal malt characters are very obvious in this beer.

Cask (handpump) at the Three Horseshoes, Marlow Bottom. OK, its a brown ale, but I don’t think I would have placed it in that category. A slightly sharp edge to the finish put me in mind of an old ale. Rich, dark ruby colour. There’s certainly some smoky malt and a touch of caramel in the aroma, but also some other elements that I found it difficult to pin down. Having now seen the ingredients list, with the unusual (for the UK anyway) combination of US hop varieties and dark malts, I can perhaps understand why. On the palate, its sharp, malty and bitter at the same time, with a hint of sweetness. Clean hops and touches of licorice too. Very fresh and tasty.

Hand pulled at the Wellington, Birmingham - with Maeib in a state of impending fatherhood! Nutty brown ale: in colour and roasted chestnut flavour. Rich, with a chocolate finish. Pretty tart, with a malt relelase to finish. Definitely a Brown Ale. Nice fullness.

Cask conditioned - handpump - Wellington Birmingham. My first visit to this new real ale pub which has sold 256 beers already this year (Day 45). Met Daniel_Brown in there and had a good chinwag. Anyway first beer of the day and a real good one. A lovely dark brown colour with a good soapy off-white head. The aroma was malty with some pleasant berry fruits and maybe a bit of cornflakes? The taste was malty and a bit nutty with some fruitiness coming through later. A very nice beer which Dan and thought could be classed as a brown ale.
