12 oz. bottle. Slightly hazy, deep amber brown, with a small off-white head. Aroma is sweet--caramel, nuts, sucrose. Flavor is similar, sweet, sugary, wood, tart finish, slight dryness in finish. Very drinkable. I suspect that this bottle is very old, but the beer still has a smooth, sweet flavor.

Draught. Small tan head, red-brown color. Malty (chocolate and caramel) in aroma. Flavor is medium malty, with a sweet taste. Sticky sweet aftertaste, with a little hops.

Bottle. I do believe I got this while in Atlanta last year. An amber/brown pour. Small light tan head. Aroma is very benign with some light nutiness and malts. Flavor has caramel, nuts, and a light finish of floral hops. Ok.

Light amber color that reminds me of tea. The head was a light brown and was not retained for long. A malty odor with what seemed to be a slight sourness. Light and crips mouthfeel with a high level of carbonation. Maltiness is overpowered by the hop bitterness. Slight taste of bitter fruit peel and bread. Overall not the worst version of the style, but probably not a beer I will go back to.

Bottle Pors a redish-brown with a tan head. Has nice aroma of caramel and roasted nutty malts. Taste is sweet and caramelly. Has a good moutheel and good carbination. Has a decent finish. A good refreshing beer.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2009 12 oz, bb 12/09. Clear, copper-brown with a quarter-inch of cream above that lasts forever. Aroma is of toasted pecan, cocoa, and light toffee. Tastes of toasted nut, bitter nutshell, unsweetened cocoa, toffee and hints of tart green apple. Medium body is smooth, slightly watery, and roast-dry on the finish. Nice lacing left on the glass. Very nice example of this venerable and underrated style.

On tap, Vortex, Midtown. Clear reddish brown, big beige head. Faint toasty aroma. A little dry at first, then touches of sweet caramel and brown sugar.

Overcarbonated. Mild caramel malt nose. Huge white head. Deep amber, almost light brown in color. Cocoa powder flavor with caramel apple and a bit of noble hops. Sour finish. Overly carbonation leads to an not enjoyable experience.

Bottle pours clear brown with thick tan head. Aroma is roasted, nutty malt. First taste is sweet roasted malt but there is something else there. A little vegetable taste. The finish is nutty and roasted malt.
