Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine

Some of us have it and some of us don’t. You know what we’re talking about. That quintessential mark of a true man of beer legend, the very badge of the great brew masters the world over. Around here, we call it beard envy. And like this robust beer, it speaks volumes with words like “Put that razor down and take a drink.” With flavors of toffee, raisins and dark fruit accentuated by vanilla and a hint of bourbon balanced by the resinous pine notes of Chinook hops, this barrel-aged barley wine masterwork is as bold and hearty as the beards we salute.

Bottle shared during RBWG 2014 Asheville - Late Nite session. Cheers! Pours clear amber with a frothy, tan head. Good stuff. Lots of bread, toffee, dates and plums. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Very nicely balanced in the finish, with more ripened fruits, toffee and bready malts. Hits the right notes.

Pours fairly deep copper and hazy with a big light brown head.nose is a moderate mixture of whiskey, floral hops, and sweetness from the barley malt. the Bourbon Barrel aging comes out strong on the flavor, fading to a general lightly hopped sweetness on the backside. finish is sticky and a little busy but not offensive. decent barleywine

Murky amber pour with a small off white head. Big bourbon and caramel on the nose, toffee, booze, fruit cake. Flavors were boozy with more toffee and caramel, vanilla, bitter earthy hop finish, touch of fruit. Plus mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Overall a solid BW.

12 ounce bottle - part of the Brick Mason Series 4-pack - $11.98 at Sherlock’s in Kennesaw, Georgia. Appearance: Pours a lightly hazed, mahogany-hued body with a rather slim, off-white head. Smell: Sweet-scented maltiness present, with toasted bread crusts, sugar glaze, caramel and such. Hint of slightly spoiled fruitiness, a touch of vanilla. Some wafting alcoholic tones present. Taste: Sugary sweet start of caramel candy, butterscotch and light brown sugar. Splash of triple sec yielding some applied heat to the tongue. Faint hints of figs and appleskin. Vanilla, a little spiciness and slight woodsiness. Finishes warming, a little rough around the edges. Lingering sweetness. Mouthfeel: Medium-plus. Medium carbonation. Overall: Comes across a little boozy, but, all in all, it’s fairly good.

Reddish amber colored body was clear, and formed a two finger thick head in the glass. This looked more similar to a DIPA pour than a darker one I was expecting of a barleywine. The aroma was sweet, with the malts showing up as brown sugar, and hops revealing some orange peel. The taste was quite sweet as well, with the first impression of honey and brown sugar. Mid palette the oak flavors became very evident, as vanilla, banana, and toffee showed up. The finish was quite dry, with charred wood tannin dominating to a slow fade. Quite a light body for the style with a distinct burn late. One of the better beers from Red Brick in my opinion.

7/31/15. On tap at Craft on Draft. Amber pour with a small khaki head, good lacing. Malty aroma, booze showing, plenty of oak, some vanilla, whiskey, caramel. A bit boozy/harsh on the flavor, some vanilla and oak, whiskey, lots of caramel. Nothing offensive but could be better.
