Black-Eye Rye is an American-style India Black Ale brewed with rye. Inspired by the popularity of this unique and interesting style, it pours midnight black and features a fluffy cappuccino colored head. Don’t let the dark color fool you though, because this is Red Brick’s hoppiest beer yet! The aroma features complex tropical fruit notes of mango and peach intermingling with classic citrus and pine, as well as a slight hint of cocoa. The flavor is resinous and piney, complimented by a velvety mouth-feel, and finishes with lingering notes of grapefruit and bittersweet chocolate. It’s sure to keep you coming back round after round!

Hints of bittersweet chocolate make this black IPA palatable. Would make a better beer to cook with than drink.

Pours a deep dark orangish amber color. Aromas of big hop action, sweet malts, and more hops. Flavor has some caramel malty tastes with nice grapefruit and floral hop taste.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a single centimetre tall tan head - about 80% opaque. Aroma of roasted malt, alcohol, nuts, earth, vanilla, caramel and some decently strong pine and hop notes. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich hop character with pine and resin the strongest, all with a large malt backbone with raisins, molasses and a touch of chocolate running through the mix. Aftertaste shows a nice rounded and relatively mellow characteristic with some figs, earth, vanilla, pine, resin and of course - hop note all noticeable. Overall, a nicely done and well layered Black IPA with a rich hop quality along with a good sweet finish - great to sample and definitely worth trying if you can find it. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on 30-December-2013 for US$2,79 sampled at home in Washington on 10-February-2015 while getting ready for a trip to the South again in two weeks. Tallahassee, Fl - Beer Stop - 12 oz bottle. Inky black pour, soft, khaki colored head that clings to the edge of the glass. Aroma has some creosote accents, a touch of licorice, some bittersweet chocolate. Flavor has some licorice accents, some oily chocolate accents, a touch of prune-like fruitiness, Mouthfeel is thick and rich. Broken apart, it rates high in all the areas, but overall, it is a bit heavy-handed. Not a bad winter warmer though.

Standard longneck. Bad label. Tannic roasted ale aroma, lightly sweet. Sweet, a little milky, coffee/rye tang, good character and tasty. Medium body, dark cocoa finish. A licorice whip mouthfeel. Beer Stop.

Mahogany body, medium brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, dark chocolate, ripe dark fruit. Caramel sweetness up front, followed by a slightly resinous hoppiness. Good malty character, not overly hoppy. Medium to full mouthfeel, smooth texture. Finish is moderately bitter, slightly acidic.

Pensacola bottle. Aroma is roasted malt and molasses with a hint of hops. Flavor is almost like a slightly hoppy, British barley wine with some lingering bitterness. Interesting and tasty.

Bottle... Pours dark brown (nearly black) with a mid-sized, creamy, beige head. Excellent retention. The aroma is a mixture of caramel, dark chocolate, toasted nuts and restrained, earthy hops. The flavor is burnt and carbonic with a lengthy, roasty, moderately bitter finish. This is more malty and stout-like than the average black IPA and that works out really well for me.

Promossa!

Bottle from Total Wine in Stuart. Pours a flat black with brownish/red edges and, after agitating, a nice tan head leaving some small spots of lace. Aroma has chocolate, ashy roast, pine and citrus - plus light acetone. Taste is of sweet roasty malts, some cocoa, some grapefruit and heavy resin. Medium bodied. Finishes tangy grapefruity with roast; nicest part - most black IPA-ish - was the end, especially once a ways down the glass. Thought it was an impy stout at the beginning, and even at the end was not as hoppy of a cascadian dark as preferred.

Bottle at the study. Dark brown with a medium sized tan head. Nose is very roasty upfront, lots of cocoa, light coffee. Some hops, but it’s more Stout is than black ipa. A bit dry on the finish, some light char. Solid and doesn’t taste too much like old hops, thank The Lord.
