3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Slightly cloudy, which I didnít expect from a pale ale. One of the first flavors, after the hop bitterness, was of honey. Good hop flavor. More along the lines of an IPA. A nice lasting head.

Good, not great beer. Sort of a resiny hop flavor, with maybe a hint of I donít know, blueberries? Not bad.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: APR 6, 2003 I have to re-review this beer. I resampled it during the Classic City Brew fest and I no longer notice anything that could even remotely describe as being canine (I did, however had another beer from a different brewery that did exhibit a stinky dog smell). The body and flavor are thinner than I really like from an APA, but there's nothing offensive. Easily drinkable and mild. There's some of the pencil wood flavor in there. It's far from offensive and I could easily seeing it coming from the grain used or wood used in some of the equipment, it's just uncommon.

2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: MAR 16, 2005 I first rated this beer in 2002 as a "newbie" to good beer and I hated it (original rating 0.6). I decided to give it another chance since my palate has changed considerably since then. Iím glad that I did since I now enjoy this beer. Nothing spectacular, but a decent beer none the less.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 15/20
I thought this beer was very hoppy. It had that IPA oily aftertaste that sticks to your tongue. If you like IPA then go for it. Otherwise stay away. Go for a Bass instead.

Iím not quite sure what they were going after here. Itís called a pale ale but the color seems too dark. Also, I expected an American Pale Ale to be hopped, while this beer was extremely malty. They might consider calling this a Scottish Ale, although I donít think that would fit their marketing gig. Aside from technicalities, the beer is not bad. Very smooth, full bodied and malty mouthfeel as well as a malty/yeasty nose. One of these beers did me for the night because of the sweetness. It wasnít terrible, but once Iíd finished the bottle, I knew I needed something with a little more balance.
