3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a transparent dark copper mahogany with a thin, wispy-lacing off-white head. Aroma of sweet dark caramel and raisins with some light fruity esters and biscuits. Body starts with good fullness and a sweet caramel and toasty pale maltiness along with notes of doughy Belgian yeast before a drier, warming peppery finish. Could hide its alcohol and be a little smoother, but still a decent brew.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: Poured a dark brown with red highlights, head is beige. Sweet fruit and mixed malts fills the nose. Taste is nice malts, dark fruits, and just enough hops to bring the palate senses full circle.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz. bottle from TheBeerSommelier- thanks, Matt! Pours a murky amber chestnut color with a small beige ring for a head. Aroma of brown and candi sugar, overripe pit fruits, caramel malts, banana, earth, and toast. Flavor of brown sugar, raisins, banana bread, toffee, caramel malts, plums, and pecans. Light-medium bodied, with modest carbonation and a sweet, sticky mouthfeel. Pretty sweet and all over the place, but interesting.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Cloudy brown pour with thin tan head (quickly dissipating) and very little lacing. Surprisingly crisp aroma. Mostly fruit (apples?) with some maltiness. Somewhat thin; the flavor has some maltiness with candy sweetness...not much else going on. Decent beer but a surprising lack of depth and character for a Belgian ale.

Thanks to TheBeerSommelier for the bottle. Reddish brown pour with a thick off white head. Raisin, hard candy and Belgian yeast aroma. Thick body, dark fruit, Belgian yeast esters and a touch of bitterness in the finish. Good brew.

Lots of chocolate caramel malts with dark fruit and notes of alchohol and minerality from the candy sugar.

2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
12 oz bottle. Pours a dark amber color with ruby hints. A finger’s worth of khaki head that fades to a nice lacing. Smell is sweet, dark fruit, caramel, and slightly metallic with a little alcohol note. Very pleasant. Taste is burnt caramel, metallic, and sour. The alcohol that I got in the aroma is well covered in the taste. The sourness was a little much for me and quite off putting. Body was well carbonated and smooth.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Until this year, ABC’s Winter Brew was a porter. But this year, it’s a new style: a big 8.2% ABV dark belgian ale. The closest thing I can describe it as is a dubbel...but let’s get drinking.
Deep reddish brown in the glass with nary a head, just wispy bits of foam. Nose is full of candi sugar, herbal hops and big fusel alcohol aromas. Hints of banana, believe it or not.
Fruity and caramel malt, slight sweet astringency from candi sugar or something of the like. Plum and blackcurrant. Very sticky in the mouth, only the driness from the alcohol keeps it from being cloying. It’s hot, lots of alcohol. Long sticky aftertaste.
Perhaps a bit young and hot but interesting nonetheless. Maybe a bit of age will settle it down.
